The Queen Returns—And She's Unforgiving

Chapter 259

Lucas looked up from his laptop when Evelyn entered the hospital room. He wasn't surprised to see her.

It was just past 9:00 am.

Evelyn walked over and placed the breakfast she had bought next to him. "Got this downstairs. Have you eaten?"

Lucas glanced at it. He had never eaten this kind of cheap, pre-packaged breakfast from a convenience store before, and she knew his preferences and habits well.

He typically had his meals around 7:30 am.

She knew that, which meant she was just going through the motions.

Lucas' eyes lingered on her face for a moment, then shifted to the breakfast onnoveldrama

the table. He said slowly, "You put a lot of thought into it."

Evelyn pretended not to catch the sarcasm in his tone. Instead, she looked at his injuries.

His bandages were wrapped tightly, so she could barely see what was underneath. Judging by the look of it, he couldn't move his right arm at all. However, the abrasions on his right hand were clearly visible and shocking.

After all these years, this was the first time she had seen him hospitalized, and it was all because of her.

She wasn't so heartless to the point that she felt nothing. She merely felt that everything had changed.

"What did the doctor say?"

"I'll be hospitalized for a week followed by further observation," Lucas replied. His deep voice was steady and unhurried.

It was as if nothing had happened between them—as if yesterday's brush with death wasn't worth mentioning. They were both being overly composed.

Evelyn knew Lucas' injuries weren't minor. If she had taken the brunt of that impact instead of him, she probably would've been in critical condition. As such, she whispered, "Thank you."

Even if he hadn't meant to save her, the fact remained that she had benefited from it. She wasn't so unreasonable that she couldn't even say thanks.

Lucas shut his laptop. The emotion in his eyes was unreadable. "They said you're fine. So, you didn't get hurt?"

"Yeah, that's right."

He nodded slowly. "That's good."

The atmosphere seemed calm, but there was always something tense.

Evelyn finally looked up at him. "Then, shall we set a date?"

That was the real reason she'd come today.

She would thank Lucas for sparing her from disaster, but at the end of the day, some disasters were caused by others. The two issues shouldn't be lumped together.

Only then did Lucas look at her, his gaze unreadable. "Does it have to be done within the next few days?"

Evelyn met his eyes and, after briefly assessing his condition, replied matter-of- factly, "It's just your arm that's hurt. Your legs are fine. It shouldn't interfere with anything."

This time, Lucas looked at her with a sneer. "You're pretty heartless."

She responded calmly, "Getting it done sooner is good for both of us. It'll mean you're officially single again."

She could be rather stubborn at times, especially now that she was fighting her own battle just to survive-she had no energy left to navigate emotional entanglements. She had to choose to pull herself out of the fire first.

Lucas just looked at her quietly. He didn't speak for a long time.

...

The atmosphere was tense until a soft voice came from the doorway.

"Lucas, I spoke with the doctor about your recovery. There are treatment options to minimize scarring."

Tiffany's voice cut off abruptly. The moment she saw Evelyn sitting by the bed, her expression turned cold.

She clearly wasn't pleased by Evelyn's presence. To her, it was a sign of poor boundaries.

Evelyn didn't turn around.

However, right as Tiffany entered the room, Lucas looked at Evelyn, replying, "Alright."

Evelyn instantly understood that it was probably the sight of Tiffany that made Lucas instantly decide as such. She stood up slowly and mentioned, "Tomorrow at 10:00 am... Don't be late."
