Chapter 1439
The two of them chatted as they walked straight into the elevator, not even glancing back. "Good thing you found your card, or this trip would've been for nothing."
As they turned, the elevator doors slid shut behind them. Mia cocked her head, thoughtful. "Weird. That guy at the front desk looked a lot like my husband."
Molly tried to look, but the doors were already closed. "No way. Didn't you say Andre's got meetings all day?"
Mia shrugged. "He's the boss. He can do whatever he wants."
Molly just rolled her eyes. "Fair enough."
They shared a knowing look as the elevator doors slid open again. "I must've been seeing things. That wasn't your Andre," Mia muttered, half trying to convince herself.
"Yeah, I think so too," Molly agreed.
Once they reached the security floor, Mia and Molly handed over all their electronics. Mia, not wanting to be weighed down, took off her jacket and walked in wearing just her sweater.
Mia swiped her ID to get in-and immediately, a big digital sign above the door lit up: "Auntie."
Instant hush. Every head in the room turned to stare at the glowing word on the screen.
The sisters stepped in, startled by the sudden silence.
What's happening?
They glanced at each other, then realized everyone's attention was locked right on them.noveldrama
Molly leaned over and whispered, "Mia, why is everyone staring? Did we mess up?"
Mia whispered back, "Don't look at me I have no idea. Why are they all glaring at us?"
She even peeked over her shoulder-no one was behind them.
Then, somewhere in the crowd, someone spoke up, "Look, one of those two has to be 'Auntie.""
A low buzz of whispers spread through the room, growing louder by the second. "She actually showed up this year! She disappeared for
ages people thought she toel no
secret job and maybe something happened. Can't believe she's here."
In The Silent Ring, there were always a few who'd take on off-the-books jobs— special requests with big payouts. If you got caught or failed, it wasn't unusual for you to just disappear, no explanation needed.
No matter what, The Silent Ring had strict rules: take a hit job, and you're off the board.
So if anyone grabbed a contract, Andre usually acted before anyone else even had a chance.
Most people figured "Auntie" had just vanished for good. Someone else piped up, "Didn't she put out a call for backup a couple years ago? I remember she rounded up a crew for some fight."
That was actually Molly who needed backup, with Mia helping out. They'd gone to Juliana's house to settle a score, and after that, Juliana's family learned to keep their heads down.
Standing there, listening to all the chatter, the sisters finally
understood what was going on. "Wow, Mia, you're seriously popular. Your sign lights up, and suddenly we're in the spotlight. Now O everyone's trying to figure you out."
Usually, only the top names made it into this level of competition, and Mia was the only woman
here-which just made her more of a legend With lots of newcomers around, and the rule that if you're gone for three years you drop in rank and after five you're out for good, everyone had been dying to know if "Auntie" would turn up.
As Mia climbed the steps to find a seat, she could feel every eye tracking her.
"Which one is Auntie, anyway?" someone whispered.
Molly pointed right at her. "That's her."
Mia broke into a wide grin, flashing perfect teeth. "Hey-"
The crowd watched her, and her soft, sweet voice floated out. Someone sighed,
"Wow, Auntie is actually adorable."
What do you think?
