Chapter 052: Unstoppable
The Bruins' offense got back in their spots, all set for the next play. Meanwhile, the ref finished measuring. Just like we thought, they came up a few inches short.
Third down, just a few inches to go.
The Bruins' O-line was already lined up. Seeing this, the Badgers scrambled to get in position. Luke scoped it out; the other team was going with zone defense again. Were they sticking to the same game plan or trying something new?
Luke's mind was racing as he yelled, "11, 11." He turned to the other side, "11, 11." Once he was sure his teammates got the signal, he called for the snap.
Luke got the ball and didn't step back. Instead, he took three big steps to his left, then turned and threw it six steps to his right, two yards forward. Boom! Marcus was right there! This time, Marcus, usually a running back, was playing receiver. The play was lightning-fast, and the Badgers' defenders were caught off guard, scrambling to cover Marcus.
"Snap! Pass! Short pass!" Kirk's excited voice came through, "Marcus Lynch, Marcus caught it! The Badgers' cornerback didn't see that coming, totally misjudged! Marcus cut inside, Logan blocked a tackler; Marcus found space, dodged one guy! Two guys! After dodging two tackles, he kept going! There's an opening! The Badgers are totally caught off guard, a gap in the defense, Marcus is still going! Three yards, five yards, eight yards, number 7 made the play! The Badgers' number 7, Aaron Henry, a freshman this year!"
"Aaron's tackle saved the day, Marcus was brought down after an eight-yard gain." Kirk's throat was dry, but he didn't have time for water, "Let's replay that. Luke switched it up before the snap, Marcus lined up on the right, confusing the cornerback, then moved over, exposing the zone defense. Luke went with a simplified screen pass, using himself as a decoy to draw the defenders, then quickly passed to the running back, with the tight end and right tackle clearing the way!"
A screen pass is basically the quarterback drawing all the defensive heat, pulling the defenders in, and then tossing the ball over their heads to a teammate. Most of the defenders are focused on the QB, and the O-line surrounds the receiver, clearing the way for him to charge forward and gain more yards.
That play was a simplified screen pass.
Luke drew the defensive focus, but he wasn't fast enough to pull them far, just enough to shift their attention, then quickly passed the ball. This left-right movement threw the defenders off balance, giving Marcus precious time to burst through and make the play.
Marcus not only got the few inches they needed but also pushed forward eight yards in one go!
"The Badgers' defensive strategy was totally read by Luke, two clean passes messed up their setup, and the Bruins moved to their own 28-yard line in just 35 seconds, including the time lost in the first down sack." Kirk quickly wrapped up his commentary. For a radio commentator, they gotta report every detail happening on the field, and being quick-tongued is a must. He hadn't felt this rush to talk in a long time.
But today, Kirk felt it again. Because the Bruins launched another attack, giving the Badgers no time to catch their breath.
Luke quickly stepped back, raised his right hand, ready to pass. This move left the Badgers' defense in chaos, torn between fearing another successful pass and worrying about a failed blitz leading to a long pass defense breakdown. In their hesitation, only Justin charged forward, breaking through the Bruins' defense like a tiger on the prowl. But in the next second, Justin's heart sank because Luke handed off the ball.
Nope, it wasn't a pass, but a handoff. Luke handed the ball to Marcus! It wasn't a pass, but a fake pass run, a running play!
In a split second, Justin almost turned to rush Marcus, but his momentum was outta control. He crashed into Luke, watching helplessly as Marcus zipped past on the right. The whole Badgers' defense got played, everyone scrambling to cover their zones, leaving just the linebacker to deal with the running back. But the Bruins' O-line nailed their blocks, clearing the linebacker and leaving a clear path.
Marcus charged forward like a freight train, sprinting with everything he had. But after just seven yards, the tight coverage in the short pass area closed in, bringing Marcus down and ending this killer run.
The coaching staff on the sidelines didn't waste a second and called a timeout.
In a passing play, the ball's in the air, and everyone's running, so it eats up less time. But in a running play, the whole O-line acts like a bulldozer, clearing the way while the running back looks for gaps to push through. This head-to-head with the defense takes more time.
With the clock ticking down, a running play wasn't the smartest move. But this surprise call tore through the Badgers' defense again, moving the ball forward. The coaching staff called a timeout right away, pulling off the play in just eight seconds. Now, with 1:17 left in the game, the Bruins had moved to their own 36-yard line, inching closer to midfield without even realizing it!
But Luke knew the pace was still too slow. At this rate, they wouldn't score a touchdown. Still, Luke stayed cool. The success of the last three plays had boosted morale, messed with the opponent's rhythm, and set the stage for future plays.
Leading his teammates forward again, they lined up at the 36-yard line. Luke carefully made tactical arrangements.
During the 40-second timeout, Luke needed to clear his head and make new plans. "They're scared of us!" Luke shouted, "They've been out of position for the last three plays. They can't stop our advance! Now we need to crush their confidence! They didn't get here by defense, but we got here by offense!" Luke clenched his fist tightly.
His eyes scanned each teammate. Through their helmets, he could see their determined and confident eyes.
"Number 99 is still a threat, but he's just one guy. Don't worry! My only prayer is, no sacks! Not 'cause it hurts to fall and get hit, but 'cause there's not much time left." Luke still had the presence of mind to joke, making all his teammates chuckle. "Nelson, Eddie, you guys need help?"
If two players couldn't handle one, that'd be pretty embarrassing.
Luke had been sacrificing himself to neutralize number 99, letting other defenders blitz. This had worked in the last three plays, but it was risky. One slip-up could mean total failure.
If Nelson and Eddie couldn't stop number 99, they'd be the real culprits.
"No!" "Of course not!" "Get lost!" Nelson and Eddie said indignantly, making the other teammates laugh again.
"We need to speed up!" Luke's words made everyone gasp, and Logan bluntly said, "You're nuts!"
Luke met his close friend's gaze, "What, you can't handle it?" Logan immediately deflated, rolling his eyes, "Who said that? Bring it on!"
"Alright, for the next play, we'll do this!" Luke already had a tactical plan in mind. They needed to speed up to further disrupt the Badgers' defense. With only 77 seconds left and 64 yards to go, Luke kept repeating to himself, don't rush, don't rush. Rushing would only cause mistakes. His mind was calm, but his blood was boiling.
"Oh my God! Oh my God!" Nate gripped the armrest tightly, his muscles tensed to the extreme, almost unable to breathe. With so little time left and such a long way to the end zone, he felt his heart had stopped beating.
"Nate, have some faith, will ya?" Jeff was pumped, shouting passionately, "We're winning, we're winning! Bambi's gonna score, trust me!"
"Bambi! Bambi!" Someone in front suddenly jumped up, raising their hands and shouting. Jeff and Nate looked over; it was Danny. He turned to everyone, "Guys! Give our team some support! Come on! They need us! Bambi!"noveldrama
The cheers barely faded before they rose again, the whole crowd joining in. The cheers grew louder, forming a powerful tornado that swirled inside the Rose Bowl. The unified chant roared down, shaking the entire world once more.
