Chapter 2028 Mr. Luther, Don't Ever Come to Me Again (1)
It was as if a bolt of lightning had streaked across the sky. Time seemed to have been split in half, freezing the atmosphere momentarily silent for several seconds.
"Do you know what you're talking about? For another woman! What do you take me as?"noveldrama
Carolien's hands trembled as her chest puffed. In her voice were evident traces of fury. She had thought that her slap could wake him up, but to her surprise, the low raspy voice sounded once more.
"Carolien..."
He was still holding on?
With a backhanded slap, Carolien's face grew gloomier. "Am I not a woman? Why can't you think for my sake? Why would you insist that I do it since you clearly know that it's a living hell?"
Having been slapped twice, his cheeks were burning hot while his heart dripped blood. Yet, he remained to raise his hand and grab her shoulders. It was as if he had used up all of his strength to say,
"I'm begging you!"
He was well aware that she was terribly raging and would never listen to any explanation he gave other than to dispel the idea. Yet, the matter had too many parties involved. Even if he knew that there were risks, even if he knew that it was equally tough on him, he must get her to go.
It was because he had agreed to Kwon. There was no turning back. Right then as they were stuck in a dilemma, they had to brace themselves in charging forward!
He promised to ensure her safety. Even if it didn't work out in the end, even if he was to tear the contract in person, he vowed to protect her safety, but he had to give it a try! The stage had been set up, so her cooperation in the scene was needed!
Words were not enough to describe how terrible Elijah's mood was right then. As he couldn't find the right words to explain the issue, all he could do was beg her.
When he forgot her birthday, or when she ran into him with Kim Mi-chi, she never once shed a tear. Even when he put forward such an absurd request, she didn't cry either, but right then, her tears couldn't stop spilling. Pulling the corner of his clothes, Carolien really wanted to give him a few slaps. Ferociously punching him, she kicked him to the ground but as she went on, she no longer had the strength to even raise her hand.
The b*stard!
Was he begging her? Was it a beg? He was clearly forcing her, forcing her to her death!
Anger overwhelmed her to the point of her internals aching. An inexplicable urge of hatred rose from the bottom of her heart. All in an instant, the emotions were so intense that they almost erupted in flames. Even when she knew about Gracie and that his love for her was all fake, she had never had such strong feelings.
He reached out and held her tightly in his arms. A clear hint of tears appeared in his eyes. He knew that she was bawling, crying her heart out. His heart ached for her, but he dared not even look her in the eyes as he pressed her onto his chest. Gracie, who he had once avoided talking about, no longer mattered to him.
Even after a long while, Carolien remained to cry in a muffled voice. He allowed her to vent her anger and hugged her tightly.
It wasn't until both of them gradually calmed down that an almost inaudible voice rang out, "I'm sorry." The two heavy words carried endless bitterness and emotions. His sexy Adam's apple rolled, but Elijah failed to find his voice as he forced back the tears in his eyes, bit by bit.
The matter itself was cruel enough, but it was indeed an unfavorable timing for it to happen at such a time. By the time he calmed down, Elijah had regained his rationality.
If she didn't know about Gracie, if it didn't involve Kim Mi-chi, and if it was just about him, he was certain that she would never hesitate to help him out and take the risk as long as he put the request forward!
Yet, when all the irrelevant factors were connected, she would only think that he was exaggerating on purpose or lying with another motive in mind, even if he explained the grave truth!
It was true that he was there to save her with Kim Mi-chi's contract but he had never thought of creating such a big fuss. It was mostly for her safety, to the point where he was truly angered only when Kwon asked for Carolien.
Yet at that point, it didn't matter whether he said it or not since she wouldn't believe him.
No one could feel more aggrieved than Elijah, especially when it came to Carolien.
It was the last thing he wanted to do in his life, but things would never go his way. Should the incident happen somewhere else, he wouldn't have acted so cowardly, but the truth was, he was not God. No matter how strong or powerful he might be, how could he ever defeat the local tyrants? Even if he was at the peak of the social ladder, he couldn't do everything as he wanted to, unlike how it seemed on the surface. He had his bitter helplessness!
Time was running out, and he couldn't come up with another solution.
Once again, Elijah felt beyond trivial and impotent. Indeed, there was always someone better.
For a long time, neither of them spoke a word. While Carolien vented her emotions, Elijah was lost in his thoughts. Just when he had a splitting headache and didn't know what to say, Carolien, whose sobbing stopped, slowly pushed him away and spoke up.
"Won't you regret it?"
Even after everything she had said, wasn't he afraid of a mishap? Or perhaps to him, women from nightclubs were used to it, so there isn't much difference to serving one more or one less.
Out of nowhere, the movie "The
Flowers of War" she had once heard of flashed through her mind, a movie that was highly debated among the publict depicted the story of a group of prostitutes usually booked down upon sacrificing themselves to protect the female students during the invasion by foreign forces. She couldn't understand what the movie was trying to portray. Perhaps most people would take their actions for granted after watching the movie and think that it was the best ending. After all, the movie had once caused a sensation in the world, but she had another voice in her heart that screamed, "Why are the humiliated prostitutes the ones stepping forward to take on the insult in the final scene? Although they're well aware that they're going to die or live a life
worse than death, they're ready for their death! They're, similarly, women and precious lives, but why are the selected female students different? Is it because the prostitutes do it for a living that they
ought to bear it all?"
She was indignant!
In an instant, Carolien shared a similar feeling with more miserableness and hatred. Why should she be pushed out to suffer for a woman, a stranger?
After venting her emotions, strong hatred and unwillingness returned with her clear mind.
Upon returning to his senses, he found that she seemed to have calmed a lot as if she was about to compromise. Only then did Elijah add, "I won't let anything happen to you! I promise!"
It was still the same sentence!
She lost count of how many times she heard it. The irony was, didn't he know about the possibility of unforeseen accidents?
Obviously, they were not on the same frequency.
Instead of Elijah giving a direct answer to her question, Carolien received the answer she wanted from his reply. He insisted on wanting her to do it! He wouldn't regret the decision from that day!
Even if she showed her rejection and threw a tantrum!
The corners of Carolien's lips curled up slightly, but there was a layer of frost in her eyes. Without realizing it,
she murmured, "This is the second time!"
The second time he pleaded for her help, to take the contract he wanted from a pervert!
The same beginning would conclude with the same ending. Not bad!
"Uh?"
He didn't hear her clearly, and nor did he understand what she meant, so he would never know the seriousness of those words. By the time he came to a realization, he was no longer qualified to go back on his
words and make up for them.
Before he could react, Carolien's cold voice rang out.
"Since that's the case, let's talk about the conditions! If you want me to go, I can do it. After everything's dealt with, we'll cut off all ties. You are to keep Misty safe for the rest of her fife. We will not owe eachother anything. No matter what happens, even if it's the end of the world, don't ever come to me again. Of course, I'll take responsibility for this mission, no matter if I end up injured or dead.
It has nothing to do with you!"
Shocked, Elijah's voice pitched. "Carolien?"
Was she going to cut off all ties with him?
No?
As he subconsciously shook his head, a cold distant voice accompanied by an icy glare shot over in an instant, "You have only one chance!"
"Carolien, why can't you trust me just once?" He wouldn't allow anything to happen to her, but it was obvious
that she was threatening him!
Elijah's brows furrowed into a frown. For some reason, there was a tinge of impatience in his heart. He was recently so occupied with the issue that was largely credited to her. Even at such a crucial moment, she was trying to make things difficult for him.
Elijah's emotions were complicated
and uncomfortable. It was true that
In
he felt guilty toward her, but men's thinking was different from women's. To him, it was a major issue that couldn't be joked around or trifled with. The rest of it, to Elijah, was insignificant and couldn't be compared at all, so it was why, right
then, he felt that she was making a big fuss and couldn't see the big picture. Yet, he failed to realize that
he wanted her trust, but there was nothing about him she could put her
faith in.
It was why no matter how anxious or begging Elijah was, the coldness was only left in the bottom of Carolien's
eyes as she barked, "Either agree or go out!"
When the eyes met, Elijah couldn't help but grit his teeth in anger. "You won't stop until you break up with me,
will you?"
Dead silence followed.
Carolien's eyes darkened, but she didn't answer. He had always been the one to have the final say in his
choice, hadn't he?
Their gazes intertwined with a myriad of emotions. It was as if they were locked in a stalemate for a century
before Elijah blurted out one word, seething, "Fine!"
Almost at the same time, a large teardrop fell to the floor and disappeared in an instant without a second tear. Carolien would not allow herself to cry for the second time.
What do you think?
