Chapter 228
Chapter 228:
“Stupid doesn’t even begin to cover it,” retorted Alex, folding his arms across his chest. “What the hell were you thinking? And don’t give me that you weren’t. That’s not like you.”
I let out a heavy sigh and fell back in my chair. “I thought I could handle it,” I said. “Keep Faith safe and keep Eliza close enough to control her. I was wrong.”noveldrama
“Yeah, no kidding.” The bitter humor in Alex’s voice softened his words, but they were still like a hammer. “So what now? What’s the plan?”
“For once in my life, I don’t know,” I said, the admission tasting bitter on my tongue.
We just sat there silently for a second before the door swung open. A nurse stepped in, her face giving nothing away. “Your wife is asking for you,” she said.
Alex’s eyebrow arched in surprise, and I scowled. “What are you talking about? My wife is right here.” I nodded toward Faith, who hadn’t moved out of the bed.
The nurse hesitated, then explained, “The woman in the other room.”
The knot in my stomach twisted tighter. Of course. Eliza. I stood, taking Alex’s hand to get him to follow me. “Let’s get this over with.”
The moment I stepped into Eliza’s room, the theatrics began. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking quite comfortable, like she owned the place. But the moment the door creaked open, her face crumpled, and tears spilled down her cheeks with startling speed.
“Dominic!” she wailed, clutching her stomach like she was in pain. “Thank God you’re here. She killed our baby! Our baby!”
I froze mid-step, shocked by the ludicrousness of her accusation. My gaze flew to Alex, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed. He met my incredulous look and mouthed, Don’t even ask.
“Our baby,” Eliza went on melodramatically, her voice rising. “She pushed me, Dominic! Out of jealousy! She killed your heir. What kind of monster does that?”
“Eliza,” I said, my voice flat, “how did she kill a baby that didn’t exist?”
Her crocodile tears dried up in a trice as her sobs were replaced by a furious glare. “How dare you?” she spat, her tone changing in an instant. “You’re taking her side?”

“I’m taking the side of reality,” I snapped. “You were never pregnant! This whole charade? It’s done.”
Eliza’s lip curled into a sneer. “You’ll pay for this,” she spat, her voice low and venomous. “I’ll make her pay. I’ll make you both pay.”
Just as I was about to react, a burst of yelling erupted down the hall, followed by a crash. My chest tightened as panic took hold. I didn’t need to think twice—I bolted from the room with Alex hot on my heels.
The scene outside Faith’s room was a nightmare. Two officers were cuffing her hands behind her back, their faces expressionless as if this were just another routine arrest.
“What the hell is going on here?!” I roared, my voice echoing through the hall. “What are you doing? That’s my wife!”
One of them stepped forward, his voice clipped as he introduced himself. “Detective Carter. We received a call that your wife assaulted your pregnant girlfriend. The alleged assault was said to have caused her to lose the pregnancy.”
I blinked in sheer incredulity at his words. “She isn’t my girlfriend!” I bellowed. “And she wasn’t pregnant! This is a lie of the worst kind in hell!”
Detective Carter remained unfazed. “We’ll determine the facts through our investigation,” he said evenly. “In the meantime, it’s advisable for everyone to cooperate.”
Something inside me broke the moment Faith was taken away in handcuffs. She didn’t look at me, not once. That emptiness in her eyes was all too familiar. She didn’t argue, didn’t plead. She just let them take her. And that scared me more than anything, the terrifying reminder of when she was at her lowest point. I couldn’t let her sink into that darkness again.
“Wait,” I barked, stepping in front of the officer. “I need a word with my wife. Just a minute.”
