Chapter 226
Chapter 226:
I shook my head, my tears spilling over. “I can’t do this anymore, Dom. It hurts too much.”
He closed the gap between us, pulling me into his arms. I wanted to fight him, to push him away, but my body wouldn’t listen to me. I allowed him to hold me while I cried.
“I love you,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I love you so much, Faith. And I’m so sorry for everything. I know I hurt you, and I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you if you let me.”
I shook my head against his chest. “I don’t believe you, Dom. You let her in. You brought her here knowing what it would do to me.”
“She’s here because I have a plan,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
I pulled back, looking up at him through tear-filled eyes. “A plan?”
He nodded. “Eliza wiped all the evidence against her. I tried to get her re-arrested, but the judge told me she’s been pardoned. I need to expose her, Faith. I need access to her phone, but she keeps it on her at all times. The only way to get close enough is to gain her trust.”
His words hung in the air between us.
“She’s pregnant, Dom,” I said, my voice shaking. “How do you explain that?”
He hesitated, guilt flashing in his eyes. “I… I don’t know. But I swear to you, Faith, I never touched her. She drugged me. I’ll prove it. Just… please trust me.”noveldrama
A loud knock on the door shattered the moment.
“Dominic!” Eliza’s voice screeched from the other side. “What are you doing in there?”
Dominic sighed, leaning his forehead against mine. “We’ll talk later,” he whispered. “But please, Faith. Don’t go. Not like this.” He unlocked the door and left me alone with Caleb.
Eliza’s shrill voice faded as they walked away, and I dropped back onto the bed, holding Caleb close. My head was a jumble, torn between wanting to believe Dominic and wanting to protect myself from more pain.
I could hear Raina’s offer to stay with her, playing in my head like a lifeline. Perhaps that was all I needed, a break from all of this, a chance to think things through.

Night fell, and I couldn’t bring myself to eat. Not even Alex’s gentle pleas at dinner, asking me to take just a bite, would work. Long gone was my appetite, sunk in the pit of my stomach where my terrors, rage, and sorrows had planted their flag. I sat in my room with Caleb in my arms, cradling him as if he were my life preserver, and whispered assurances I wasn’t sure I felt myself.
The next morning, the house was eerily quiet. It was as if the tension from last night had seeped into the walls. My body felt heavy as I sat up, Caleb stirring in his crib. The baby needed me; his soft whimpers a reminder that, no matter how broken I felt, I couldn’t give up.
I decided I’d prepare something to eat. It wasn’t for me—I didn’t feel like eating—but I needed my strength to take care of Caleb. His little body still depended on mine.
The kitchen was empty when I first entered, but my solace was short-lived. Eliza sat at the dining table, her legs crossed and a smug smile plastered on her face.
“Well, well,” she said, her voice full of mockery. “Good morning, sleepyhead. Now that you’re up, you can make me something to eat.”
I shut my eyes, willing myself not to explode. I couldn’t let her get to me. She fed off chaos, and I wouldn’t give her the pleasure.
“Faith,” Eliza drawled, her voice rising. “Did you hear me? Make. Me. Something. To. Eat.”
I opened my eyes, staring straight ahead. I clenched my fists at my sides as I walked around the kitchen, pulling out the ingredients for breakfast. She kept on talking, grating against my ears like nails on a chalkboard.
