The way Beth practically glowed, clinging to every word, while Clayton remained distant, indifferent—the contrast was glaring.

Caitlin didn’t know Clayton well, but one thing was painfully obvious: there was no warmth, no affection in his voice when he spoke to Beth. Since Clayton didn’t love Beth, then why were they together? Was there some reason they couldn’t part ways? A family alliance, perhaps? That seemed the most likely explanation.
