The Queen Returns—And She's Unforgiving

Chapter 264

Evelyn had just finished recording her fingerprint.noveldrama

Hearing the staff's question, she raised her head, her expression calm and indifferent. "It's voluntary."

Lucas glanced at her, his gaze lingering on her emotionless expression. She seemed more resolute and at ease than she had ever been before, especially with a subtle urgency that he couldn't ignore.

His eyes stayed on her for a moment longer, but he looked away, giving a slow nod.

The staff observed that neither of them showed any emotional reaction. There was no shouting, no heated argument. They seemed like strangers handling the necessary paperwork to resolve a bothersome issue.

Once the system confirmed the fingerprints and identity details were entered, the staff then stamped the documents.

At this sight, Evelyn felt a faint tremor in her chest, as if her heart had been shaken. Memories of her marriage, both good and bad, flashed through her mind like vivid images-each one etched deeply into her consciousness. It felt like a storm brewing inside her heart.

Her past longing for Lucas' love had now turned into a yearning for freedom, to break away from the endless waiting that had only imprisoned her. No matter which phase of her life she looked at, it had cost her something-time, emotions, and sacrifices.

It wasn't until she held the divorce certificate in her hands, her ties with Lucas officially severed, that her heartbeat finally began to slow down.

Evelyn didn't spare him another glance. She didn't wonder how he was feeling, nor did she care if he looked relieved or regretful. Whether he was smiling or sulking, it didn't matter anymore.

She was done caring.

She opened her purse and put the documents away. While she was organizing them, a few papers slipped out and fell to the floor.

Just as she reached down to pick them up, Lucas had already bent over, his left hand helping her gather the folded papers.

His gaze flicked over the top of the papers, and his eyes landed on words printed on one of them. "Excision surgery..."

He didn't see the rest, but it was clearly a document from the hospital.

He paused for a moment, then looked at her. "Did you visit your uncle?"

Evelyn immediately snatched the paper from his hand, her face sharp with a hint of bitterness. "Mr. Grant, please don't invade other people's privacy," she said, her tone firm, her gaze cold.

It was especially so, now that they were no longer married!

She didn't elaborate or answer further. Of course, Lucas' question was understandable. Leonard had been hospitalized and was soon to undergo liver removal and a transplant.

It was natural for him to make such a connection.

Evelyn quickly gathered her things and, without another word, walked away, her back straight and distant.

Lucas watched her retreating figure. He caught a glimpse of her pausing by the door. She was looking at the divorce certificate, and the frozen expression on her face seemed to thaw in that instant. She gave a faint smile, but it was so fleeting that even he couldn't discern its meaning.

He couldn't look away at that moment.

...

Morgan approached him and spoke, breaking the silence. "Mr. Grant, do you want to see Ms. Reed off? She doesn't seem like herself today."

"No need." Lucas sounded indifferent, showing no interest in escorting his ex-wife.

He glanced at his right arm, which throbbed with pain, sending sharp pangs through his nerves, distracting him. The constant pain was a nuisance, and he wanted to avoid thinking about it.

Morgan, puzzled, asked, "What's wrong? Isn't it a good thing to show some courtesy and see her off?"

Lucas raised his head, his expression unreadable. With long strides, he moved toward the door, his voice colder than before. "Why should I ruin her good mood?"

Morgan was caught off guard, confusion flickering in his eyes. After a moment, he shook his head and chose to drop the matter.

...

Evelyn arrived at the bus stop, pulled out her SIM card, and switched to the new one that she had just acquired. She took a last look at the old SIM. It had been with her for over ten years.

While reluctant, she knew it was time to start afresh, so she broke the old SIM in half and threw it in the trash.

Checking the time, it was almost lunch. She had a meeting with Jason at 2:00 pm, which meant she still had time to catch a quick break.

She had been running on pure adrenaline ever since leaving the hospital.

She raised her head, about to hail a cab, when she saw a familiar black Rolls- Royce Phantom pulling out from the parking area near the courthouse.

Her brow furrowed. She knew that the car belonged to Lucas, but what about the Maybach she had seen in the business district earlier?

It quickly dawned on her that Tiffany wasn't with Lucas at the courthouse. Clearly, they had arrived separately, but honestly, it didn't matter to Evelyn anymore.

The cab she had called arrived, and she climbed in, rubbing her aching temples.

After a moment's thought, she sent a message to the group chat with Justine and Sebastian, mentioning, "I just got the divorce certificate from the courthouse today."

Meanwhile, in the car, the driver, Shawn Lambert, saw Evelyn and instinctively commented, "Mrs... Ms. Reed just got into the car."

In the backseat, Lucas held the divorce certificate in his palm, lost in thought.

Hearing Shawn's voice, he slowly lifted his head, his expression still distant and unreadable. He didn't show any concern and calmly replied, "Take me to the service hall in the business district."

Shawn made a quick U-turn, heading in the direction of the business district.

It wasn't far-just a few hundred yards. When they arrived, Lucas got out and checked his phone. A message from Michael informed him that Tiffany was handling Arrowpoint's business registration.

As he took a few steps, he noticed a unique incoming call. He answered the phone casually, "Who is this?"

Whatever was said on the other end caused him to pause for a moment. After a brief silence, he lowered his gaze, gently touching the divorce certificate in his hand. "Alright, I understand. Confirmed..."

He ended the call, standing still for a moment, his mind clearly preoccupied.

He stared at the divorce certificate for a long while, his expression deep and thoughtful.

It wasn't until Tiffany walked out from the service hall, smiling warmly at him, that

he looked up. She waved at him, mentioning, "Lucas, over here."

Finally, Lucas looked toward her. As he walked over, he passed by a trash can. Without a second thought, he tore the information section of the divorce certificate and tossed it in the trash.
