Chapter 243
Luckily, Evelyn was strong and composed enough. Even though Arrowpoint Solutions had barged its way into the spotlight, she and Sebastian had already considered some practical issues.
They decided it was time to offer additional benefits to the Flying Seal Group employees as a way to steady the troops.
Sebastian had specially reserved a private room at The Versus that evening. He would invite the technical and project departments for dinner and to discuss Flying Seal Group's upcoming plans.
As the group arrived at The Versus, Evelyn's phone buzzed.
She glanced at it. It was the first message from Lucas since she got his new number.
"The day after tomorrow is Mr. Miller Senior's birthday banquet. Would you be able to attend it?"
Evelyn instinctively furrowed her brows.
Maria had mentioned this event before, saying she should attend with Lucas. She had assumed Lucas would find a way to decline, yet he still hadn't done so.
In what capacity were they supposed to attend together?
Let alone the fact that they were now in the middle of a divorce-even appearing together would raise eyebrows. How were they supposed to explain their relationship?
Even before the divorce, they had kept their marriage private.
It still wouldn't be appropriate. Lucas couldn't possibly not understand that.
"What's wrong, Evie?" Justine had stopped and turned back to look at Evelyn, calling out in confusion.
Evelyn snapped out of her thoughts. She considered it for a moment, then decided not to deal with it right now.
"I'm coming."
Sebastian was already leading the group toward the private room. Evelyn and Justine slowly followed them upstairs.
As they passed the second floor, they noticed a lively scene near another private room.
Just as they were about to head upstairs, a woman's surprised voice sounded behind them. "Evelyn?"
Evelyn turned around and saw Millie standing there. At the same time, Tiffany stepped out of the private room. The usual softness in her expression was gone, becoming serious and disdainful.
Millie looked at Evelyn and slowly smiled. "Since we've run into each other, why don't we have a meal together?"
She paused. Then, she couldn't help but let out a small laugh, gesturing toward the private room. "I'm hosting tonight. You should know some of the guests. I'm sure you've heard that Tiffany has started her own company. It's a joyous occasion, and as her mother, I ought to thank all her close friends."
Only then did a layer of frost appear in Evelyn's expression. How could she not hear the satisfaction in Millie's words?noveldrama
Justine was even quicker to retort, mockery clear in her voice. "I heard the Moores didn't have much money, yet they had the funds to start such a big company. Ms. Moore really took a shortcut. How nice."
Tiffany disliked how Justine mindlessly went to Evelyn's defence. However, she planned to ignore it as she understood why both women would react in this manner.
To outsiders, it probably looked like Justine was being petty on Evelyn's behalf. After all, Evelyn had never received such treatment from Lucas. For her to feel jealous was only natural, but it did not stir any anger in Millie.
Instead, she acted as if she didn't understand what Justine meant and enthusiastically invited Evelyn.
"You should join us and be blessed by some good fortune. Tiffany and Lucas get along well. He willingly invested a lot in her for the sake of her future development. Even so, Tiffany is capable in her own right.
"Of course, even though they have a good relationship, we still value propriety. As such, we had to show Lucas our gratitude..."
Staring coldly at Millie, Evelyn felt that she was heartless, noticing that she was showing off.
It was because Millie had once stabbed Naomi in the back that Naomi was labelled as "a vicious heiress who stole her best friend's design sketches". That caused Evelyn to feel down whenever she saw Millie.
Evelyn hadn't intended to waste time or emotion on people like this, and that idea had completely vanished.
She slowly turned around to face them, her gaze icing over as she said flatly, "It's true-living off someone else's husband does take a certain kind of talent."
Tiffany's expression flickered slightly.
At the same time, a sharp click of a lighter echoed from nearby.
Evelyn turned her head coldly and locked eyes with Lucas.
What do you think?
