Chapter 496 The Rift Widens
પ
Maddox walked in quickly. The moment he saw Sierra, he asked bluntly, “Do you know what Johnathan is doing?”
“What do you mean?” Sierra replied calmly.
“I just got word–he’s gone to international waters. What’s he planning?”
Since things had gotten this far, Sierra didn’t see the point in hiding it.
“He’s going after White.”
“White? Is he insane?” Maddox’s face filled with urgency. “He knows White is untouchable.”
“And why exactly is White untouchable?” Sierra’s eyes narrowed. “Do you know something we don’t?”
Maddox pressed his lips together. “Several departments see–him as valuable. He’s invested a lot of money in the country.”
“So what you’re saying is, as long as there’s money involved, any betrayal of conscience is fair game?”
Her voice was sharp. Maddox frowned.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what if I told you he was targeting us?”
“That’s impossible,” Maddox said, shaking his head. “He promised-”
He stopped mid–sentence, realizing the slip. His face tensed.
Sierra wasn’t surprised–just disappointed.

“So you knew. You knew all along he was dirty, and you kept it from Johnathan. Maddox, Professor Yaeger has always treated you like his closest friend. You knew what happened to him last time. How could this?”
She was genuinely heartbroken.
She had always liked Johnathan’s group of friends. Even after the last leak, neither she nor Johnathan wanted to believe any of them were responsible.
But Maddox had betrayed that trust.
If she felt this awful, how much worse would Johnathan feel when he found out? He’d pretenued to brush it off, but she knew he cared deeply.
Maddox’s expression was grim./It took him a while before he finally spoke.
“I only learned the full truth later. At the time, I didn’t mean to cause any harm. I casually mentioned something to someone around me. I never thought it would leak.”

The rest had spiraled out of his control.
The Treno family might have clout, but there were still people above him. He wasn’t free. He had superiors. What choice did he have?
He’d tried to set conditions–he’d insisted Johnathan couldn’t be harmed.
But now, looking back, it was clear he’d failed.
The thing he feared most had happened. Sierra had found out. Which meant Johnathan would know soon
too.
There was only one thing he could say now.
“I’m sorry.”
Sierra shook her head. “You don’t owe me an apology. You betrayed Johnathan’s trust.”
She used to think Johnathan was being too paranoid. Now she realized she’d been the naive one.
Her words struck Maddox like a slap to the face. Ashamed, he turned and left. noveldrama
Dickson, who had been silently watching, couldn’t help but speak.
“How could Maddox do that?”
Sierra exhaled slowly.
“Maybe this is what Professor Yaeger meant by being powerless.”
Like Johnathan had said–they all came from families with expectations and baggage.
News of Johnathan going to international waters soon reached Draven and Mateo, The two of them arrived together.
“What the hell is Johnathan thinking? Why didn’t he tell us anything?” Mateo complained.
He had noticed Johnathan becoming more distant lately.
Draven thought for a moment. “Does this have to do with White?”
Sierra nodded and explained what she and Johnathan had been planning.
Mateo’s eyes widened. “So that’s why Johnathan suddenly seemed to warm up to White. I thought he’d had a change of heart. Turns out it was all an act. Damn, Sierra, you two really had us fooled. You played the part perfectly–I believed it?
Mateo was more easygoing, never suspecting a thing. But Draven was different.
He fell silent for a moment, then asked sharply, “What role did Maddox play in all this?”
Sierra was surprised by Draven’s insight. She gave him a look before answering.

“No way!” Mateo shot up from his seat. “Maddox wouldn’t do that. There has to be a mistake”
The realization clearly rattled him.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids. We grew up together. He wouldn’t–he couldn’t… I don’t believe it.”
Draven stayed silent, which only made Mateo more nervous.
“Draven, say something! Maddox wouldn’t do that. Right? We know him–don’t we?”
