Haynes O'Brien's words tore away the last shreds of pretense between them, leaving both Skyler and Jonathan Williams looking utterly humiliated.

Nora had always been extraordinary. Even without the resources of a powerful family, she'd raised a daughter this gifted.

When Aurora told him Stella was favored to win the upcoming violin competition, Skyler had felt a surge of pride. At last, the Williams family could boast a daughter who truly excelled at something.

He'd decided that, since Stella loved the violin so much and shone so brightly in this field, he would support her wholeheartedly. Winning the championship would be a turning point for her career—a perfect prelude to formally welcoming her back into the Williams family. Their promises not to let Leonard off the book were empty words, the kind people say when they're buying time.
