Chapter 69
Chapter 69
The next day, Cordelia and Brooklyn went shopping and happened to walk pass the largest bookstore
in Millstone, Pages & Prose.
This bookstore was a four-story stunner, fancier than average mall, and a hotspot for social media
influencers.
Cordelia planned to buy a textbook on financial cost management and a few practice problems. As long
as she passed this last exam next year, she'd have her CPA certificate.
As they walked in, they noticed a line of people queuing up – it seemed like a book signing event. To
their surprise, it was Jamie who was signing.
“Mr. Colby?” Cordelia was taken aback.
It was early autumn, and Jamie was wearing a stylish grey shirt.
“Cordelia? What brings you here?” Jamie asked while signing books, glancing at his watch, “Why don't
you guys look around? I'll be done in 15 minutes.”
Cordelia went to pick out her textbook and Brooklyn bought a novel, complaining, “These books are so
pricey.”
After Jamie was done signing, he had two books in his hands.
“For you two, one each.”
Cordelia took one, it was titled The CPA Success Blueprint.
“Did you write this?” Cordelia's eyes sparkled with admiration for Jamie.
“Yep.”
Cordelia glanced at the inscription in her book, which read: May your dreams come true soon.
“Thank you, Mr. Colby.”
Perhaps they both found their last encounter at the hotel too awkward to mention.
“I'm heading to my accounting firm now. Wanna tag along?” Jamie checked his watch.
He was always on the clock, always busy.
Cordelia had always wanted to work at an accounting firm. With her day wide open, she was thrilled to
accept Jamie's invitation.
So, they hopped in the car with Jamie.
Jamie said that when he returns home tomorrow, he can help Cordelia find the notes on financial cost
management. He has already highlighted the key points and provided annotations. With Cordelia's
intelligence, as long as she puts in the effort, she will definitely pass.
“Once you pass, you can come work at my accounting firm.” Jamie seemed to say it offhand.
Cordelia thought of Manda, who was working at an accounting firm even without a CPA certificate.
“I don't have my certificate yet. Can I still come?” Cordelia asked.
Brooklyn elbowed Cordelia lightly and gave her a meaningful look, as if to say: Don't let your feelings
mess with your work. Lumos Enterprises' job opportunities are golden.
She thought Cordelia was just being bitter.
“Sure, you can start as an assistant. Once you're officially a CPA, you'll hit the ground running.”
Cordelia was seriously considering it. Being a CPA was a dream she had harbored since she was
fifteen. Plus, big corporations, with all their hustle and bustle, were better than the constant scrutiny
and rumors about her and Ronan. Couldn't people just focus on their work instead of gossiping all the
time? Maybe it was because Ronan was the subject of the rumors that people were so interested, but
the constant chatter was wearing her down.
What's more, Cordelia just had a big fight with Ronan, and it had dampened her interest in Lumos
Enterprises.
As they arrived at Jamie's accounting firm, Cordelia was struck dumb.
PrimeNumbers Accounting.
During their encounter at the hotel, Thomas had mentioned that PrimeNumbers Accounting was
Jamie's.
The largest accounting firm in all of Millstone, home to the top financial experts.
Cordelia was overwhelmed with excitement, “You're the…”
“Founder and partner.” Jamie completed her sentence.
Cordelia immediately felt full of admiration for Jamie.
Jamie gave them a tour. Each accountant had their own office, everyone was busy. Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
Through the glass doors, she saw everyone working with intense concentration, dressed professionally
and totally focused.
This was what professionals looked like. Cordelia yearned for such a work environment, just like the
one she dreamed of.
“Are you guys hiring right now?” Cordelia asked Jamie, her eyes shining.
“Yes, one of my partners, Brenda, is looking for an assistant. She's a female accountant and it's tough
to find the right fit. Are you interested?”
Cordelia nodded earnestly.
This was the work environment she had always dreamed of.
After the tour, to not impose on Jamie, Cordelia and Brooklyn took the bus home.
“Cordelia, I still think the job opportunity at Lumos Enterprises is rare. Maybe reconsider your decision
to quit?” Brooklyn suggested.
Cordelia shook her head, “I can't stay there anymore. We've had a fallout, and also, people at the
company are too gossipy.”
Brooklyn agreed with this.
When Brooklyn asked why Cordelia had a fallout with Ronan, Cordelia told her the truth about what
happened on Barney's birthday, but she left out the part about Adrian mentioning a "contractual
marriage".
What irritated Cordelia the most was that Ronan always listened to Deanna.
Brooklyn thought for a moment, then said, “It seems to me that Mr. Evans listens to Deanna, but only
because what she says hits a nerve. He really wants you to have his baby, and you just had an
abortion, which made him really mad.”
Cordelia took one look at Brooklyn and was like, "Him? No way!"
Brooklyn figured, since it was all a big misunderstanding, she ought to help clear things up.
