Chapter 183: Taking Emma home

Richard and Helena fussed over Emma like a pair of mother hens, their concern and care palpable in the air. Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.

As Emma was wheeled away for a battery of tests in the obstetrics department, Richard felt his heart constrict with worry.

He wanted nothing more than to be by her side, to hold her hand and reassure her through

every step of the process.

One of the nurses seeing him so clingy to her hand jokingly asked if he thought she was about to give birth.

Richard wanted to stay regardless.

But the nurses had been firm in their instructions; Richard and Helena were to wait outside while Emma underwent the necessary examinations. And so, Richard found himself pacing the

corridor.

“She’ll be alright, dear,” Helena murmured, “Emma is strong, and she has the best care

possible.”

Richard managed a tight smile. “I know, Mom. It’s just… after everything that’s happened, I can’t help but worry.”

Helena laid a comforting hand on his arm, her eyes shining with understanding. “That’s what it means to be a parent, Richard. From now on, your heart will always be split in two – one half belonging to you, and the other half belonging to your child.”

Richard nodded, his mother’s words ringing true deep within his soul.

At last, after what felt like an eternity, the door opened, and Emma emerged, her face aglow with a radiant smile. Richard rushed to her side, his every movement filled with tender

concern.

“How did it go, baby” he asked, his eyes searching hers for any hint of distress.

Emma’s smile only widened, her eyes shining with happiness. “Everything went perfectly,” she assured him, her hand coming to rest on her still–flat abdomen. “The doctors said our little one is doing just fine.”

Richard felt a wave of relief wash over him, his shoulders sagging with the release of tension he hadn’t even realized he’d been carrying. Pulling Emma into a gentle embrace, he pressed a feather light kiss to her forehead, his heart swelling with love and gratitude.

The doctors took Richard aside, walking him through the various tests and examinations they had conducted, offering guidance and advice on how best to care for Emma and ensure a healthy pregnancy. Richard listened with rapt attention, committing every word to memory, determined to be the best husband and father he could possibly be.

As they made their way to the hospital’s exit, Richard paused to handle the billing and paperwork, leaving Emma in Helena’s capable hands. Jonathan, ever the doting father, went to collect Emma’s prescribed medications, assuring them that he would meet them outside shortly.

Emma and Helena waited patiently in the lobby, the older woman’s arm wrapped protectively around her daughter–in–law’s shoulders. It was then that a familiar voice rang out, cutting through the hushed murmurs of the hospital like a knife.

“Emma!”

Emma’s head snapped up, her eyes narrowing as she sought out the source of the voice. And there, striding towards them with a deep frown etched onto his face, was her uncle, Martin.

Why did she have to see him at such a day like today? She cast him an annoyed look.

“What do you want?” Emma asked, her tone icy and devoid of warmth. At this point, she was almost convinced that her uncle was a cockroach that was hard to kill.

Martin’s frown deepened at her frosty reception. “Is that any way to address your uncle?” he chided, his voice laced with disappointment. He could not understand why his children could not even give him basic respect.

Seeing his expression, Emma could already guess what he was thinking. She felt the urge to slap him, but she was too tired for his nonsense. She had never seen anyone as shameless as her uncle. He still thought at this point that he had done nothing wrong. Emma held back the urge to vomit. She did not want to see his face.

Emma made to brush past him, but Martin stepped into her path, blocking her way. Before either of them could react, Helena stepped forward, her protective instincts kicking into high gear as she firmly pushed Martin aside. She proceeded to step in front of Emma to block Martin’s sight. Emma was carrying her grandchild. It was already quite lucky that the child

was unharmed and stable after what had happened yesterday. They had second all night checking on Emma and doing all recommended tests. She was not going to take any chances.

The older man stumbled, caught off guard by Helena’s surprising strength, and tumbled to the ground with an undignified yelp. Nurses rushed to his aid, but Martin was already scrambling to his feet, his face flushed with anger and embarrassment.

“How dare you!” he sputtered, rounding on Helena with fury blazing in his eyes. “Who do you think you are, manhandling me like that?”

It was at that moment that Richard and Jonathan returned, their expressions darkening as they took in the scene unfolding before them. In an instant, they were at Helena and Emma’s sides, shielding them from Martin’s wrath.

“Who are you to block me from speaking to my niece?” Martin demanded, his gaze flickering between the two men with a mixture of confusion and thinly veiled hostility.

Jonathan met Martin’s glare with a steely look of his own, his frame rigid and unyielding. ” Emma is my daughter–in–law,” he stated, his voice ringing with authority. “And I’ll be damned if I let anyone cause her or my family any harm.”

Realization dawned on Martin’s face then, his eyes widening as he took in the protective stances of Richard and Jonathan, the unmistakable air of power and wealth that surrounded them. This was the family Emma had married into – a family of influence and affluence, far beyond anything he could have imagined.

Swallowing his pride, Martin straightened his shoulders and attempted a polite smile. “My apologies,” he said, his voice dripping with forced civility. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Martin, Emma’s uncle.”

Jonathan regarded him with a cold, appraising stare, his eyes boring into Martin’s with an intensity that sent a shiver down the older man’s spine.

“I don’t care if you are God himself,” Jonathan said, his voice low and laced with a subtle threat. “If you ever come near my daughter–in–law again, I will make sure you are unable to get up again.”

The darkness that flickered in Jonathan’s eyes in that moment was enough to rob Martin of his voice, his bravado deflating like a punctured balloon. Without another word, Richard and Jonathan turned away, ushering Emma and Helena towards the exit, leaving Martin to stew in his humiliation and fear.

As they stepped out into the crisp evening air, Richard couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride and gratitude towards his father. Jonathan had protected his family with a ferocity that brooked no argument, a display of unwavering anger that did not shock Richard.

Apart from the fact that his Emma was quite loveable, she was carrying his parent’s first grandchild. His parents were not letting anyone near Emma that could harm her.

When they got into the car, he could not help but pull Emma closer and place a kiss on her

head.

After ensuring that Emma was resting peacefully, her soft breaths filling the air with a gentle rhythm, Richard slipped out of their bedroom, careful not to disturb her slumber. He made his way down the grand staircase, his mind already buzzing with the weight of the decisions he knew he had to make. He was somewhat curious how his grandfather would feel when he

heard of his decision?

In the privacy of his study, Richard settled into the plush–leather chair behind his mahogany desk, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. His gaze swept over the rich tapestry of awards and accolades that adorned the walls, a testament to his numerous accomplishments and the success of the Madison Industries empire his grandfather so coveted.
