Chapter 356: To forgiveness and forever...

Lyla

I took the stairs two at a time, my heart hammering against my ribs as I raced toward Ramsey’s room. Lenny had just told me that Ramsey was back and in his quarters. After spending the entire night wondering where he’d gone, relief flooded through me at the news.

I knocked gently when I reached his door, but there was no response. My stomach clenched with anxiety as I turned the knob—it was unlocked. I let myself inside, moving carefully into the darkened room.

The room was dark; all the curtains were still drawn from the night before. I paused for a few seconds, trying to adjust my eyes to the darkened room. The sound of running water from the bathroom told me Ramsey was in the shower. I picked my way across the familiar space and settled on the edge of his bed to wait.

My hands twisted in my lap as I tried to rehearse what I would say. Should I start with an apology? Should I explain that I hadn’t told him about the pregnancy because I was going to die anyway and didn’t want to break his heart twice? Or should I tell him how I’d tried to find the right moment, only to be advised against it by Nanny, Lenny, and Terra, who worried he wouldn’t let me fulfil my duties as the Moonsinger?

But those were just excuses. If I wanted to tell him, I would have made out the right time and still told him, regardless of Nanny’s advice or Terra’s.

The water stopped running, and my heart resumed its frantic pounding. I’d never seen Ramsey as hurt as he’d been yesterday, and the fear that this could shatter our relationship forever made my chest tight with panic.

I didn’t want to lose him. I love him so much.

It felt like an eternity before the bathroom door opened. When Ramsey finally came out, he wore only a white towel wrapped around his waist. Water droplets clung to his hair and traced paths down his chest, following the defined lines of muscle that flexed as he moved. Even in my anxious state, the sight of him made my breath catch.

He was still as handsome as ever.

He paused mid-step when he saw me sitting there.

"Hi," I greeted him, my voice barely above a whisper. "The door was open... I knocked, but there was no response, so I—" My words came out in a jumbled rush.

"I mean, I’m sorry for intruding on your space. I know you said you needed time, but... I had to speak with you... I should have informed you beforehand, but your phone was switched off, and our mindlink is inaccessible."

Panic was making me stutter and stumble over explanations. I could feel myself spiralling, the fear of losing him making my hands shake and my voice crack. This was it. This was the moment that would either save us or destroy everything we’d built together.

"I didn’t mean to intrude, but I needed to talk to you," I tried for the last "I was worried when you didn’t come back last night, and I know you’re angry, but please just let me explain—"

Ramsey walked past me to the window without a word. He pulled the curtains open with one fluid motion, flooding the room with morning light. The sudden brightness made me squint as he turned to look at me.

"Sit," he said simply.

I was already sitting, but my anxiety made me fidget. I stood up, then sat back down, then stood again. My leg bounced uncontrollably as I watched him walk toward his closet. The waiting was killing me.

When he came back, he was dressed in simple jeans and a grey sweater—casual clothes that somehow made him look more approachable than when he had the towel. He crossed the room and sat down beside me on the bed.

I turned toward him, ready to launch into my prepared speech, when he pulled me close and wrapped his arms around me.

The unexpected embrace left me speechless. I’d been braced for anger, for accusations, for the cold distance I’d seen in his eyes yesterday. This gentle acceptance was the last thing I’d expected.

"Stop talking for a moment," he said quietly, his voice rumbling against my ear. "Just let me hold you."

I melted into his warmth, feeling every tense muscle in my body finally relaxing.

"It must have been difficult," he continued, his hand stroking my back. "Dealing with the pregnancy and being a Moonsinger, and then hiding it from me. I’m sorry I overreacted."

His words broke something inside me. All the fear, all the guilt, all the sleepless nights of wondering how to tell him—it all came pouring out in uncontrollable sobs. Tears streamed down my face as weeks of suppressed emotion finally found release.

Despite Ramsey’s best efforts to comfort me, I couldn’t stop crying. The relief was too overwhelming, the love in his voice too precious after the cold silence I’d endured.

Finally, he pulled back to look at me, an amused smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "You need to stop crying now, or you’re going to make yourself sick."

"I was so afraid," I managed between hiccupping sobs. "When I first found out about the pregnancy, I was terrified and confused. I wanted to tell you, but there was never a right time, and I was going to die anyway. I didn’t want you to suffer from both losses."

Ramsey pulled me back into his arms, his hand stroking my hair gently. "It’s fine," he murmured. "Everything is fine, and I’m not angry anymore."

We stayed like that until my sobs finally quieted to sniffles. Only then did Ramsey pull away to look at my stomach. His gaze was soft and wondering.

"You’re not showing yet," he observed.

I laughed through my tears. "Soon I will be. Give it a few more weeks."

His eyes filled with love, which took my breath away. I wish it were another universe. I wish I had been ordinary, and he too. He would have made a great dad. Tears gathered at the corners as he reached out to touch my stomach as if it were something precious.

"Our babies, Lyla," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "We really made them."

I nodded, placing my hand over his. "We did."

He laughed, nodding his head. "Becoming a father is the last thing I expected out of this life. I didn’t dare to dream it."

"You know, right?" I chuckled. "But here we are, after banging several times."

He laughed again, then cupped my chin. "You’re truly one of a kind. You’ve managed to rewrite history. The only Moonsinger who didn’t lose her powers, who has a two-tailed wolf, and now you’re pregnant with—"

"Twins," I finished, smiling through my tears.

We both dissolved into another bout of laughter, the happy sound washing away the last of yesterday’s pain.

Then Ramsey’s expression grew serious. He took my hands in his, his thumbs tracing gentle circles on my palms. noveldrama

"I don’t want our children to be born bastards," he said, "Can we get married now?"

Fresh tears spilt down my cheeks, but these were tears of pure joy. I nodded frantically, unable to speak around the happiness lodged in my throat.

"Nothing would make me happier," I finally managed to say.

He nodded and slid down the bed, dropping to one knee. From his pocket, he pulled out a ring box.

"I must have proposed to you a thousand times already, and every time, I wonder if you’d marry me. I love you more than I did the last time. I love you, Lyla... so much. I don’t care what’s hanging over our head, I don’t care about any prophecy, I just want to be yours. Will you marry me?"

I nodded, wiping out my tears as I knelt in front of him, too. "Yes, Ramsey... Yes..."

He slid the ring into my fingers, cushioning the other engagement ring that was already there.

Well, I hope someone tells my children that I had to be proposed to twice before I accepted.

Ramsey’s smile was radiant as ever as he pulled me to my feet, his lips finding mine in a kiss that tasted like forgiveness and forever.

And somewhere at the back of my mind, I wish this moment would never end.
