He let out a low hum of acknowledgment, his voice rough.

"You were just standing there, not making a sound? That's terrifying!" Caroline switched on the bedside lamp, frowning. "Weren't you at the hospital?"

"I went. Now I'm back."

"If you went, you should've stayed there."

David leaned in, one knee pressing onto the bed as he tilted her chin up. "Are you mad at me?"

"No. I don't have the right to be."

His gaze darkened.

"How's Elizabeth?" she asked. "Mother and child are safe, right? No complications?"

David didn't answer.

"Not interested." Caroline let out a small, amused laugh. "Let me guess-you two even picked out a name for the baby?"

David's lips curled slightly. But the smirk vanished just as quickly.

It was a mocking smile.

She really believed he had gone there to keep that child.

Before he could speak, Caroline asked, "What matters more to me is where we'renoveldrama

headed. David, have you thought about how this ends?"

David's voice was low, resolute. "There is no end for us."

We would keep entangling. This lifetime. The next. Forever.

"We've come this far, and you still refuse to let me go..." Caroline let out a long
