Chapter 1850
His emotional detachment wasn't something he was born with, nor was it because he was missing some kind of emotional nerve. Instead, he'd numbed himself to all feelings, convincing himself he wouldn't feel pain, sadness, fear, or dread. This indifference was his way of shielding himself.
That day, tragedy struck the Costello family. His parents were in a car accident. He'd been with them, but somehow, he survived. The hospital was a whirlwind of chaos, and he stood there, numb, outside the operating room. His grandfather, an elderly man, arrived in a rush. When he learned that his son and daughter-in-law hadn't made it, he almost fainted from the shock.noveldrama
He was disconnected from the emotions swirling around him, as if they'd been drained out of his body. His grandfather held him, crying, but he couldn't shed a tear. He didn't even know why he should.
He began to question the point of his survival, drifting through his days in a fog. Later, his grandfather urged him to live for revenge, believing that through vengeance, he might find a reason to carry on.
Life overseas was tough, but luckily, he couldn't feel the pain. Everything was driven by revenge. He needed influence abroad, so taking lives became just another task in his mission. He watched people on the brink of death plead for mercy, but he showed none.
Those years drenched in blood and death pushed him deeper into darkness. Then came Sophie-his redemption. Her red dress, the same shade as blood, radiated life. She was like a resilient blade of grass, rising from the ashes amidst a raging fire. He hadn't felt such vibrant energy in ages-pure, sincere, brave. She seemed to water the dry fields of his heart, making them flourish wildly.
Just like his love for Sophie, which had taken root and was growing uncontrollably.
If only that car accident had never happened...
"Bang-!"
"Damn it! Who's the fool who can't drive?"
A red-haired teenager burst out of a car in the middle of the street, storming towards him in anger. Colby opened his eyes and saw a girl stepping out with the boy. His driver got out, apologizing, "Sorry, my master was in a rush. We'll cover the damages."
"Who needs his money? Being in a hurry doesn't mean he can speed! Who does he think he is?"
The boy was ready to keep arguing,
but the girl tugged at him, saying,
"We don't need the money. Your
car's worse off than ours." Her voice was sweet and familiar. Colby felt like he'd heard it before, so he rolled down his window. When their eyes met, he was sure he'd seen her somewhere.
Yes, he must have.
Yet all he said, with a cool demeanor, was, "Leave her my card." The driver got back in, and they drove off. Colby rubbed his temples, thinking he must be worn out from the flight.
"Sir, about tonight's welcome dinner-your father mentioned you should change into something more formal. Miss Russell and Mr. Aldridge will be there too."
"Yeah, I got it."
What do you think?
