The black Rolls-Royce glided forward.

Inside the car, Maynard stared straight ahead, his voice low and steady. "I know. My family was out of line. Don't worry I'll handle this whole engagement mess. I won't let you get caught in the middle."

"You're not the one making things difficult for me. I'm the one who dragged you into this," Briony replied quietly. "Even though I don't have direct proof, I can guess who's behind the rumors. It's Xenia Cooper-she's targeting me."noveldrama

"How could you have dragged me into this?" Maynard let out a weary sigh. "If I hadn't insisted on being around you, those photos and gossip posts would never have happened. If Xenia Cooper really is after you, it's only because I gave her the ammunition. I'm not exactly innocent here."

Briony pressed her fingers to her temple, closing her eyes for a moment. "Let's get our story straight. We'll just say I'm not thinking about getting married again, and we'll co-parent."

Maynard pursed his lips, considering. "That kind of makes you sound like the heartbreaker, you know."

"I don't care," Briony said calmly. “As long as Lori isn't dragged into the public mess, nothing else matters."

"A mother's reputation affects her child's life, too," Maynard pointed out. "How about this: we say we dated, but I cheated during our relationship. You broke up with me, disappointed. Later, you found out you were pregnant, and didn't have the heart to end the pregnancy, so you raised the child on your own without telling me. I only found out recently. But by now, you're completely done with me, so we agreed to co-parent.”

Briony was silent.

That plotline sounded oddly familiar.

Maynard cleared his throat, a little sheepish. "My youngest sister's been binge- watching soap operas at home. I catch a few scenes now and then..."

Honestly, these melodramas were filled with plots like that nowadays.

"Isn't that a bit much?" Briony looked at him. "I've heard your family is pretty strict.

If you take the blame as the cheating boyfriend, won't they be furious with you?”

"It's fine. For Lori's sake, the worst they'll do is make me kneel in the family chapel for a while."

Briony stared at him, speechless.

As ridiculous as it sounded, there really wasn't a better solution right now.

She sighed, lips pressed in resignation. "Alright. We'll do it your way."

Twenty minutes later, the black Rolls-Royce pulled up to Pearbrook Mansion.

Just as the car stopped, another dark vehicle appeared a sleek black Bentley.

Stewart's car.

Briony stepped out and, turning around, spotted Stewart getting out as well.

Across a few yards of driveway, their eyes met.

Stewart, looking tense, immediately strode toward her—

"Lori's mom is home!" called out a warm, delighted voice from the front door.

Afra was helping Maynard's grandmother, Beatrice, over to greet Briony.
