Reborn From Oblivion

Chapter 832

Greta was the last to catch wind of Cameron's bankruptcy and his plans to sell off everything he owned.

Standing smack dab in the middle of the living room, she felt dwarfed by the vastness around her. Her eyes were red-rimmed as she looked over at Cameron, who was slumped on the couch like he'd been hit by a truck. "Cameron, could you give me a slice of what you get from selling the house?"

Cameron, looking more beat down than a boxer in the twelfth round, stared at her like she'd just asked for the moon. "Seriously? All you can think about right now is what's in it for you?"

Greta's face was tight as a drum, her lips a thin line. "You know my health's in the gutter. Without money, I'm a goner."

Cameron chuckled, but it was the kind of laugh that didn't reach his eyes. "Don't sweat it, I'll toss you a million bucks. That should cover your kidney transplant."

The old Greta would've scoffed at a million-it would've seemed like chump change. But after scraping by for a year, the thought of having enough to live on for a few years and cover her dialysis bills felt like winning the lottery.

After all, she still had Cameron. He could still bring in the bacon.

But his next words hit her like a freight train.

"Once you get the million, we're getting a divorce."

Greta shook like a leaf. "What did you just say?" She couldn't believe her ears. Rushing over to him, she clutched his hands, tears streaming down her face. "Cameron, we can't split up. You're in a tight spot, and I can't bail on you now."

Cameron wasn't sure what was going on in his own heart. This was the perfect chance to break free from Greta, but something tugged at him, making it hard to let go.

They'd been in each other's lives for so long-was it crazy to think they could weather this storm together? If they could, he'd gladly bury the hatchet and start fresh with her.

"Greta, I'm broke and up to my neck in debt. Sticking with me will only drag you down," he said, his gaze softening a bit.

Greta's grip on his hands loosened.

She'd been so focused on making it through the long haul that she forgot Cameron's debts might be a ball and chain he'd never shake off.

She rose on unsteady feet, taking in the sight of the man who was still handsome, but whose charm had faded fast.

A guy who's broke, bankrupt, and clueless-no matter how good-looking-ends up being a flop without any appeal.

Greta silently scolded herself for her poor choices. How did she end up hitching her wagon to a sinking ship?

"Cameron, is a million really enough? You know my health's a wreck-I need megs, regular dialysis, and I'm waiting on a kidney transplant. Plus, I've got a disabled mom to look after Can't you throw a little more my way?"

The bit of softness that had surfaced in Cameron turned to ice in an instant.

Greta's eyes had lost their warmth, now filled with cold calculation, leaving him feeling stone cold.

He squinted at her. "So, how much are you angling for?"

Greta shot back, "Ten million."

Cameron's lips curled into a wicked grin.

He fixed her with a frosty stare.

Fear flickered across Greta's face.

But she was a pro at playing the victim, her eyes welling up as she whispered, "Cameron, is that a threat?" Her knack for flipping the script was unmatched.
