Chapter 1010: Saved
Chapter 1010: Chapter 1010: Saved
Someone grabbed her arm from behind, pulling her up and dragging her to a rock above, away from the river.
Bai Xiao lay face down on the spot where she was just rescued, exhausted to the point she couldn’t move a muscle.
She felt as though her body was as heavy as a thousand pounds, requiring great effort even to move her little finger.
Yet she still lifted her head, looking to both sides, and finally saw the rescued doctor Zhang and Xiaoyu.
Doctor Zhang seemed to have exhausted his last bit of strength, his arms hung limp as he knelt on the riverbank, gasping and groaning softly.
At this point, he had already removed the backpack from his back and needed a good breath of air.
He collapsed dejectedly onto the ground, closed his eyes, and told himself that he was proud; he managed to keep the equipment and medicines intact. Even in his youth, he had not experienced such thrills—who would have thought that even in old age, he would feel this passionate again.
The water flowed down from their clothes and hair.
Bai Xiao closed her eyes, listening to the sound of each other’s heavy breathing, listening to the sound of blood pulsing through their vessels.
Fortunately, they were still alive. noveldrama
At this moment, the night wind blew, finally making them feel a chill all over.
There were countless voices speaking around her, but she couldn’t understand what they were saying.
She knew she had fainted, albeit briefly.
Soon she was gasping for air, her body suddenly relaxing which made her feel dizzy and nauseous.
It was really dangerous.
She still couldn’t quite believe they managed to reach the shore, thanks to so many unfamiliar faces around her—dark but simple.
Bai Xiao’s chest heaved with her forceful breathing; she turned to look at Xiaoyu, who wore a slight smile on the beautiful line of her lips. Xiaoyu laughed out loud.
The joy of surviving made them all appreciate the value of life.
As the remnants of the cold wave surged through them, they suddenly shivered violently.
Someone draped clothes over them, several people supported each one of them, and even helped them to the village.
After changing into dry clothes and sitting in front of the fire, the three looked at each other in their bedraggled states and then laughed.
The clothes didn’t fit; though wearing them made them look mismatched.
But with the warm fire and the indescribable taste of ginger tea they drank, the three finally stopped trembling.
She finally had the chance to clearly see that they were in the main hall of a house. In front of them, a fire was lit on a stove-like structure made with three stones. Bai Xiao deliberately turned over some firewood and saw a few flat bluestone slabs at the bottom, which explained why the bamboo house didn’t catch fire.
Laughing, Xiaoyu introduced, "This is the village chief’s home; you’re so lucky. I’ve never been here before, and this time I’ve followed you for a great bargain. The ginger tea just given to us was brought by the Clan Leader’s wife; here, she’s called Granny."
The village chief is the Clan Leader’s son. If it weren’t for Uncle Wa Ji banging the gong hard and drawing the villagers to help, our three lives would have been lost in the river," Xiaoyu grinned.
"You kid, you’re still smiling! Although I’m from the south, my mediocre swimming skills would’ve only led to drowning in your river. Plus, with that backpack, I really thought I was done for—sitting here feels like I’ve been reborn," Doctor Zhang sighed. Going to the countryside, he initially thought it was just a way to pass time; who would have known that it could cost him his life?
If he had known earlier, he would have requested a benefit even if it meant confronting his superiors face to face. Otherwise, close to retirement, he would end up risking his life.
If the rural medical team were always in such danger, who would willingly come down?
Let those deans try it themselves.
To see just how risky the rural medical team is.
Xiaoyu smiled, "Doctor Zhang, I really thank you all."
She stood up, suddenly serious, and deeply bowed to Bai Xiao and Doctor Zhang.
It confused both Doctor Zhang and Bai Xiao. The child had just come out of the water with them; had water really gotten into her brain?
Why was she thanking them? Xiaoyu was the one who saved them.
Otherwise, those two would have only waited to die.
"Xiaoyu, what are you doing? We should be thanking you. Why would you thank us? It was you who saved us, along with so many villagers," Doctor Zhang puzzled.
Xiaoyu bowed three times deeply.
"Doctor Bai, Doctor Zhang, I used to think you city doctors couldn’t endure hardship, always clamoring to return after a few days. In my mind, you were all people who could only enjoy life and couldn’t handle even a little hardship. When you first arrived, I indeed looked down on you.
But after the recent events, I finally understand that you are true doctors.
You are doctors worthy of my respect, and I thank you on behalf of all the villagers you are going to visit."
This left Bai Xiao completely puzzled.
She pulled Xiaoyu to sit by the fire.
Even though the current temperature wasn’t low, the nighttime temperature was generally cooler than daytime, and having suffered in the water earlier, they felt chilled to the bone.
Bai Xiao worried more that if they caught a cold and developed a fever, it would be troublesome.
"Xiaoyu, whatever you have to say, sit and speak by the fire. Why get up and talk so formally? Besides, what you said is completely unclear to us. If I were to say, a doctor’s moral integrity—your father is the one most worthy of respect.
We just happened to encounter such a thrilling incident only on this rare visit; your father experiences it yearly, monthly, and has walked these years; I’m afraid he’s faced falling into the river more than once.
So, seriously, it’s your father who deserves our admiration as a doctor."
After this incident, both Bai Xiao and Doctor Zhang were genuinely impressed by Dean Lü.
"There’s no way you don’t understand. Doctor Zhang and Doctor Bai risked their lives by not abandoning the backpacks they carried; in your minds, these medicines and equipment are of utmost importance, even more than your lives.
Just for this, I genuinely respect you," Xiaoyu said earnestly.
Doctor Zhang and Bai Xiao exchanged a glance, inwardly knowing why they hadn’t abandoned the backpacks—they were tightly strapped with knots around their chests, making it impossible to discard them. From their hearts, they felt ashamed.
Because they actually had planned to throw them away, but failed.
Yet this was something neither of them spoke of or would speak of.
What do you think?
