Chapter 197
with her after all.
In her heart, Selena knew exactly why Margot was at Bennett Corporation-it was all about Everett, of course. Even so, the recent days of closeness with Everett made it hard to accept that he was secretly meeting up with Margot. He had just talked about starting fresh As a journalist, she couldn't just leap to conclusions based on assumptions. So, she shook off her wandering thoughts and trailed behind Margot, keeping a safe distance to avoid being noticed.
She rode the elevator up to the top floor. By now, most of the staff had cleared out for the day, leaving the office dim except for the glow coming from the CEO's office. Margot must've gone in there. Unsure of what she'd find, her mind buzzed with possibilities, but she needed to see for herself. Clenching the takeout bag a little tighter, she took a deep breath and headed toward the office.
The door was slightly open, and light streamed out. As Selena neared, she spotted Everett standing by the floor-to-ceiling window. The black shirt and suit pants he'd donned her choice from earlier-looked incredibly sharp on him. His strong back muscles were enticing and always made her feel safe.
She used to love wrapping her arms around him while they slept, feeling secure and content in his embrace. But now, another woman was holding him from behind, in such a familiar way.
Selena stood there, her face draining of color. He had told her he was headed back here for a meeting, that he and Margot weren't how she imagined. But it was all lies.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed by a giant hand, struggling to breathe. She stood frozen for several moments, then turned away without confronting them, and left.
As she passed a trash can, she
tossed the takeout bag of roast duck into it without even looking back. She stepped into the elevator, which descended a few floors before the doors opened to Joy's surprised voice, "Selena? What are you doing here?"
Selena looked up, dazed and silent. Joy immediately sensed something was wrong and asked, "You came to see Everett, right? Did you two... have a fight?"
It didn't make sense. As far as she knew, Everett hadn't been to the office lately and was spending all his time with Selena at the villa. Their relationship had seemed so affectionate.
The elevator wasn't the place for this conversation, so Joy led Selena to her office. After closing the door and pouring a cup of herbal tea, she held Selena's cold hands, saying, "Selena, please, talk to me. Whatever it is, I'm here for you!"
Despite her distress, Selena didn't want Joy to worry too much. She tried to sound casual, "It's nothing, just... saw Everett and Margot hugging, that's all."
Her tone was light, but Joy could sense her hurt. Selena had been ready to let go. But Everett's sweet words and promises of starting anew had chipped away at her defenses, only for him to betray her so harshly.
Joy was both sympathetic and angry, "Everett really crossed the line this time. If he's into Margot, he shouldn't be stringing you along and refusing to divorce while still holding on to his fling!"
"I just don't get what Everett sees in Margot. She's not as pretty as you, her figure's average, and her family's nothing special. He usually has high standards, but with her, it's like he's lost his mind. Even after finding out that Jimmy and Margot's agent were in cahoots, he kept it under wraps..."
