Chapter 256
Chapter 256
The classroom was silent as a grave.
Hayley glanced at the riches scattered across the floor-maybe a dozen or twenty gems, each as big or bigger than the one Cordelia was holding. A riot of colors sparkled under the sunlight, suggesting a value of millions.
Could it be real?
That was the thought buzzing in everyone's head.
Even though the class was filled with kids from Greenmeadow's most prestigious families, none of their families were known to casually wear a box of gems as accessories.
Yet, the quality of those gems, shining and translucent under the sunlight, didn't seem fake at least, they would still be worth a fortune even if they
were.
Everyone gulped, and Daniel finally broke the silence, "Cordelia, those gems of yours... they're worth a fortune, right?"
Cordelia shook her head, "Just a box of rocks, really."
The class was dumbfounded.
Their eyes then drifted towards Juliana's finger. The 50-carat gem that once seemed impressive now felt insignificant...
Juliana quietly slid her hand into her drawer, removing the ring with cheeks flushing in embarrassment.
At the same time, irritation bubbled within her. Where on earth did Cordelia get all these gems? And to showcase them right when she flaunted her ring-it had to be a deliberate slap in the face!
Cordelia, oblivious to the brewing storm of thoughts around her, bent down to gather her gems back into the box.
She then turned her attention back to the ring, planning to return it to Midnight Scent after school.
After organizing her things and sitting down, Cordelia reached for her phone and messaged Skyler-since their last case together, they had exchanged contacts for easier communication.
LearnLover: "Would it be possible to use your system to look into a car accident from six years ago?"
After sending the message, she thought of Mr. All-Round, who had introduced her to Skyler. Hence, she sent another message to him: "I'm asking Skyler to look into something for me, is that okay?"
Mr. All-Round replied instantly: "Feel free to use him."Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
Cordelia found the choice of words "use" quite peculiar.
While Mr. All-Round had replied quickly, Skyler took his time.
After a class, she checked her phone again and saw Skyler's reply, mentioning he was on a flight and would check as soon as he could.
She sent over the names of Little Flame's parents and waited.
Skyler's response came after another lesson: "Lia, those records are encrypted, beyond the reach of regular police."
Cordelia was about to give up when Skyler immediately added that he had managed to decrypt them but couldn't share the details without getting the green light from his boss, hinting at Mr. All-Round.
Puzzled, Cordelia wondered why Mr. All-Round's permission was needed to discuss the details of Little Flame's parents' accident.
After a brief exchange, Skyler promised to get approval.
Feeling a bit irked by the idea of Mr.
All-Round possibly tattling to the adults, Cordelia nheless felt relieved when Yates messaged her, thanking her and suggesting they meet in the afternoon to discuss how the matter was resolved.
With some time to kill before her next class, Cordelia decided to head to Midnight Scent to return the ring, her mind a mix of anticipation and relief at the resolution of events.
Meanwhile, inside Midnight Scent...
Bill was practically nursing a migraine as he stared at the piece of paper in his hands. Every so often, he'd glance up at Everard and couldn't help but call out, "Boss~~"
The elongation of the word, with its twists and turns, clashed hilariously with his burly frame and his attempt at a North American accent. Everard gave him a cool glance.
Bill just chuckled sheepishly, "Boss, Fortuna Group isn't just my baby, you know if we can't crack this algorithm, our new R&D project is dead in the water. Look, I've even consulted several professors, a and none of them could figure it out. Please, give me a hand!"
Everard scoffed, "I'm no mathematician."
But Bill persisted, "But you're brilliant at math! Look, Tech from Country M is leagues ahead of us. I'm really at my wit's end here. Just help me out with this mathematical model, and I swear, I won't bother you again!"
Just as Everard was about to retort, something caught his eye, and he straightened up, his attention shifting to the Bible in his hands.
At that moment, the curtains of Midnight Scent were drawn back, and Cordelia stepped in. As soon as she entered, she tossed her ring at Bill and turned her gaze to the stack of numbers in his hands.
