Chapter 081: Self-Contradiction
Richard was about ready to keel over; he'd been duped again. Luke pulled a double fake, and with his slick footwork and dodging skills, he dodged two tackles back-to- back before making the pass. Richard, using all his muscle, slammed on the brakes, but it was already too late. All he could do was dive, hoping to crash into Julio and mess up the catch.
But nah, it was too late, way too late.
Even Superman couldn't have made it in time. While Richard was still airborne, he saw Julio snag the pass, no drama at all. Right after, Richard slammed into Julio, not quite tackling him, but the hit still sent Julio stumbling out of bounds.
A tiny win in a sea of losses, Julio didn't keep going.
But Richard wasn't feeling any better. He scrambled up and yelled at his makeshift team, "What the hell, guys? That clown's running around like he owns the place, and you're just gonna let him? Damn it!"
This set off a chain reaction. Von jumped up too, "Are you brain-dead? That fake was so obvious, and you still fell for it?" Von, like a raging bull, stormed over, "How many yards did you give up? Another seven yards, man! Jesus, why don't you just let him waltz into the end zone and end this train wreck!"
At the twenty-four-yard line, Luke and his ragtag team had marched from the opposite twenty-yard line, crossing the whole field to get to the twenty-four-yard line on this side, playing so well it left everyone speechless.
The defense was falling apart, chaos everywhere; meanwhile, the offense was high- fiving and celebrating, riding high.
Adam knew this scrimmage was already a done deal. The young players were losing their cool and their heads, lacking the experience of seasoned players and the guidance of coaches, they were easily thrown off course. With repeated hits, the whole defensive strategy and concept were shattered and all over the place.
More accurately, it was under the master plan of number eleven that they crumbled.
Adam had this crazy feeling that number eleven had sniffed out the opportunity. After barely dodging an interception on the second down and pulling it off, the next two offensive plays seemed calculated, step by step tearing apart the opponent's defense. Even on the fourth down, number eleven seemed to be playing mind games, using two fakes and dodging two tackles to pull off the ultimate taunt.
But man, it was just too wild. Even the top quarterbacks in the league couldn't pull that off: How could this guy think he could dodge Von's tackle, dodge another one, and believe his fakes would fool everyone?
Thinking it over, Adam shook off the idea. Unless Iron Man with some high-tech help was in the mix, it was totally impossible. But Adam couldn't wrap his head around why number eleven's game was so all over the place. On the second and fourth downs, his footwork was insane, like top-tier league stuff; but outside those plays, he was just your run-of-the-mill pocket quarterback.
Every quarterback's got their own style and skills, all different, but generally, you can split them into two types: pocket quarterbacks and running quarterbacks.
A pocket quarterback, or the classic old-school type, mainly chills in the protection pocket of the offensive line, using their eyes, brains, tactics, and strategy to lead the team forward with their passing game.
Their strengths are clear: reading defenses, setting up plays, pinpoint passing accuracy, and so on; their weaknesses are also clear: weak running game and just average physical fitness, nothing special there.
Think Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees-classic pocket quarterbacks.
A running quarterback is the new breed, mixing running and passing. Normally, they hang in the pocket too, watching, reading, and passing; but if the pocket collapses or there's no one to throw to, they can use their legs to get out of the pocket, either to keep passing or to run the ball themselves.
Their strengths are in their mobility, diverse play options, and strong physicality, great in confrontations; their weaknesses usually show in rougher passing skills, often choking when it comes to delivering a clutch pass.
Cam Newton and Michael Vick are prime examples of running quarterbacks, with Michael being the trailblazer who totally changed how people see quarterbacks. Overall, pocket quarterbacks need higher smarts, guts, and judgment, with just average physical fitness being enough; while running quarterbacks need to be in top physical shape, with killer confrontation skills being their ace in the hole.

Among the top four quarterbacks, the youngest, Aaron Rodgers, has some serious running chops and can move the ball when it counts, but he's still a classic pocket quarterback. Passing is his bread and butter, setting him apart from the new wave of running quarterbacks.
This shows that the league still leans towards pocket quarterbacks, but a bunch of running quarterbacks are popping up in the new generation, with Cam being a prime example. So, there's always this debate about whether the future belongs to running quarterbacks.
Adam's head was spinning over this. Sometimes, number eleven's game looked a lot like Aaron's, using his legs to make plays and nail passes in clutch moments. But other times, he was a straight-up pocket passer. His moments of brilliance were like Iron Man's suit glitching-sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, making him totally unpredictable.
On the field, the scrimmage was proving this point. Starting from the fifth down, number eleven stayed in the pocket again, firing on all cylinders.
The opposing defense finally switched up their tactics, leaving three guys on the front line to rush and four in the backfield to cover, shutting down all of number eleven's passing options. But number eleven got even cooler under pressure, first surprising everyone by hitting Jeremy for a five-yard gain; then connecting with Logan for a seven-yard gain, pushing the offense into the red zone.
On the seventh down, Von almost made a game-changing play, swatting down number eleven's pass and nearly picking it off, but the pass was too hot to handle. On the eighth down, Richard managed to mess up a pass to Jeremy, causing an incomplete. On the ninth down, number eleven found Logan in the crowd again, delivering a killer pass and scoring the touchdown!
Game over!
This was the first team to score a touchdown since the scrimmage started, and they did it within nine downs. The offensive leader was the standout rookie Luke, while the defensive leader was the top draft pick contender Von. Nobody saw this coming. Not just the players, even the coaches and scouts were left speechless, totally baffled by the outcome.noveldrama
This was exactly what Adam was thinking. This number eleven, with his lackluster physical fitness, was a real head-scratcher; yet his killer passing skills and field awareness were mind-blowing. Such a mix of contradictions in one player was unheard of, especially since he was an Avalis American, a type never seen before in NFL history. Heck, even Asian players were a rarity here.

So, how do you even write a scouting report for number eleven? More importantly, there was barely any reference material just two games and one training camp, not nearly enough to put together a full report. So, come draft time, is Luke worth the pick?
Man, what a headache!
Turning his head, Adam saw Blake's wry smile, "Honestly, I can't figure out this number eleven. Is he amazing or awful?" Just three days into the training camp, the roller- coaster ride of his performance was already giving everyone headaches, not to mention his previous NCAA experience.
Adam pursed his lips, "Can't figure it out? Then keep watching. Got a better idea?"
"The problem is, there's less than two months until the draft. Time, that's exactly what we don't have," Blake sighed. "If he had come out a year earlier, things would be different now." At least with a full season, the scouting report would have more solid data.
Adam sighed inwardly too, "That's just the way it goes. Maybe it's his destiny." He turned to look at Luke, who was celebrating wildly with his makeshift teammates, "But as an Avalis American quarterback, maybe he's already mentally prepared. He needs to put in ten times, a hundred times the effort of others to even have a shot at making it in the league."
The first Asian player in NFL history, the first Avalis American player, the first Avalis American quarterback! When will the day come to make such history?
"We did it! We did it!" After scoring the touchdown, Logan was screaming and shouting like a madman, mimicking a glider, bypassing the grim-faced Von and the cursing Richard, finally rushing towards Luke. The two did a chest bump, then cheered and laughed like there was no tomorrow, "Bambi! We did it, we did it again!" "Hey, what about us?" Julio also rushed over, his face lit up with an incredulous smile, giving Luke a hard pat on the chest, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but man, I love your passes." With that, everyone laughed, the happiness even spreading to the other players standing on the sidelines.
But for them, this wasn't exactly good news: the competition was heating up. Especially
for Cam.
