Chapter 069: A Narrow Encounter with an Old Foe
Twenty-one dudes.
Yeah, you heard right. There were twenty-one quarterbacks in the mix, including Luke. That's a lot of QBs, no wonder everyone was saying this year was stacked for quarterbacks.
You had some big names like Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, and Jack Locker. Plus, there were a bunch of solid but lesser-known guys who could totally be backups. With seven draft rounds, only about half of these guys would make it to the pros. The competition was brutal.
Luke scanned the crowd and immediately spotted Scott Tolzien-the Badgers' QB, the Bruins' rival in the Rose Bowl, and a witness to that crazy night.
But Scott didn't seem too hung up on that loss. He grinned, waved at Luke, and walked over. "Hey, you going for the draft this year too?" Scott looked a bit nervous but relaxed when he saw Luke. "I was just thinking, no way there's no Pac-12 rep this year!"
"Keep that on the down-low, man. If others hear it, I'll get my ass kicked." Luke's joke made Scott laugh out loud.
The big name from the Pac-12 this year was Stanford's QB, Andrew Luck. He came second in the Heisman Trophy voting, losing to Cam Newton. Everyone was hyped for Andrew and Cam to go head-to-head in the draft, but Andrew decided to stay for his senior year. So, Cam's hype just kept growing.noveldrama
Even without Andrew, the Pac-12 had some top prospects. Washington's Jack was expected to go in the first two rounds, maybe even the first. Compared to Luke, who was pretty much a nobody, Jack was in a whole different league.
That's why Luke made that joke, and both he and Scott glanced over at Jack. Jack noticed, nodded, and Luke and Scott had to stifle their laughter.
"Looks like you know your place," a voice sneered from the side. No need to turn around; that cocky tone could only belong to Cam.
Sure enough, Cam swaggered over, a smug grin on his face. "Wait, does anyone know who this guy is? Quarterback? Seriously, which team are you the QB for? Never heard of you. Did the committee screw up and let some nobody in? Asian guy, you sure you know how to play football?"
Among the twenty-one quarterbacks, almost all were starters for their college teams. 1 Threefur "bur years-or Står thing yarnes yavescounis prěrný ur fudza, writert was utten utirétt to the rookie training camp. Even if they weren't starters, they were usually key backups or regular rotation players.
Out of the 332 players in the rookie camp, about 280 got in this way. The rest were picked based on scout reports, coach recommendations, or school endorsements.
Guys who came out of nowhere during the draft were rare, especially for quarterbacks. Luke was one of those rare cases, barely scraping by in the California state selection process to qualify for the rookie camp.
"Can't believe we got an elite class player among the rookies this year, truly rare," Cam said, trying to humiliate Luke by calling him a "hillbilly." Luke shot back with "elite class." Most football players came from ordinary backgrounds, some from slums or rural areas. Cam himself came from a poor family.
Back in college, Cam went to the University of Florida, but in '08, he got busted for swiping a classmate's laptop. Since it was his first screw-up, they didn't press charges, but he got banned from the school for life. With no other choice, he transferred to a junior college. After killing it there for a year, he caught the eye of top football schools again and ended up at Auburn University. And that's how he got to where he is now.
Luke's quick comeback put Cam in a tight spot. If someone threw that line back at him, Cam would be in deep trouble again. But Luke wasn't done. "What's even more shocking is that a guy with such a fancy education has zero manners, eavesdropping and butting into other people's conversations. What's wrong with the elite class these days?"
Luke aimed that last bit at Scott, totally ignoring Cam. The other quarterbacks around them cracked up.
Cam, looking both embarrassed and pissed, stepped forward and shoved Luke's shoulder, trying to use his size to intimidate him. "Who the hell are you? Nobody. You got the guts to give your name?"

"Which moron wants to know?" Luke didn't back down, stepping forward and bumping into Cam. "Who the hell do you think you are? You ask, and I have to answer? You think you're Jesus or something?"
Cam's face twisted with anger.
Since early December, after the Heisman Trophy results came out, Cam had been riding high. He beat out Ivy League star Andrew Luck to win the biggest award in college football, and during the draft stage, he was the top pick, thinking no one could touch him, not even Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller. He was living his best life.
But now, this Asian kid Luke had humiliated him twice, and it was driving him nuts. Without realizing it, Cam's hands balled into fists, and he gritted his teeth. "Coward! Weakling! What do you have besides a big mouth? Bet you don't even have the important parts of a man!"
Luke just laughed. "I don't know who keeps coming up to provoke me, but all I see is a big mouth. Was your mouth busy with a hooker's lower half last night? Is that why it stinks so much?" Luke's words were like daggers, hitting Cam right where it hurt!
Luke's fists were clenched too, ready to throw down at any second.
"Shut up! Both of you, shut up!" Someone rushed over, yelling at the other quarterbacks, "Quick, pull these two apart. If word gets out that rookies are brawling on the first day of the draft, our whole training camp will be a joke. You think the media will go easy on us?"
At the shout, others jumped in to separate Luke and Cam.
Luke stayed cool the whole time. Cam's words didn't faze him; they had no bite. His trash talk was nothing compared to what Richard had thrown at him the day before. So when the quarterbacks pulled him away, he took a couple of steps back, unclenched his fists, and showed he was chill, no need to worry.

His calm demeanor only pissed Cam off more. Cam struggled like a madman, shoving away the guys trying to mediate. At Auburn, Cam's nickname was "Superman" because of his insane strength and build, and today he was living up to it. "Damn it! What are you doing?" Two staff members quickly walked over, sternly scolding, "If you want to forfeit the draft, get out now; if you want to be kicked out of the training camp, keep acting up!" Not just the staff, but other rookies were now watching the scene unfold.
Cam finally cooled down. He shot a nasty glare at Luke, then turned to the staff, taking a deep breath. "No, it's just the boys messing around. Seeing a lot of old friends here, some clashes are inevitable. After all, this is the football draft, not basketball." He even tried to crack a lame joke.
One of the staff members rolled his eyes, "My favorite team is the Los Angeles Lakers."
Feeling awkward, Cam touched his nose and shut up, stepping aside. The commotion ended before it could blow up.
Turning back, Cam pointed two fingers at his eyes and then at Luke, as if to say: See you on the field.
Luke raised an eyebrow, sneered, and then turned to chat with Scott, acting like he couldn't care less about Cam. This made Cam grit his teeth again.
"You're really bold!" Scott chuckled, "That's Cam Newton."
"So what, does he have three arms? Or four legs?" Luke's retort left Scott momentarily
stunned, then he burst into laughter. Yeah, he couldn't argue with that.
What do you think?
