Chapter 059: Letter of Recommendation
This place screams "coach's office"-a desk buried under a mountain of messy files, a whiteboard by the door covered in tactical scribbles, and in the opposite corner, an ancient desktop and a TV with a wobbly stack of videotapes. Yeah, this is definitely where they break down game footage.
"Take a load off," Rick said, waving from behind his desk. "And don't sweat it if you get the chair all gross. The school would probably love to swap it out for a Rose Bowl champ."
Rick's usually got this serious, no-nonsense vibe, so cracking a joke was way out of character. Luke was caught off guard. First Kevin, now Rick-what was up with today?
Rick didn't seem to mind Luke's surprise and gave a small smile before getting back to business. "You're a senior now, right? Made up your mind yet? Going for the draft or thinking about something else?"
"Yeah, I've made up my mind. I'm going for it," Luke said, his words simple but packed with determination. His calm demeanor showed he meant business.
Now it was Rick's turn to be a bit surprised. He chuckled, "That's what I wanted to hear." He pulled out a drawer and handed Luke an envelope. "I was worried if you bailed, this letter would go to waste."
Luke, a bit confused, took the envelope. It had "Recommendation Letter" written on it. He glanced at Rick, who nodded for him to open it. With the green light, Luke tore it open and started reading.
It was a recommendation letter from UCLA's head coach, Rick Neuheisel, officially putting Luke Howard up for the rookie training camp.
The NFL, or National Football League, is the big leagues with 32 teams split into the AFC and NFC. Each conference has four divisions: East, West, North, and South, with four teams each.
This league isn't just the top dog in North America; it's the biggest pro football league on the planet. Its cash flow, TV ratings, and market clout make it the heavyweight champ of North American sports. The Super Bowl, their annual showdown, pulls in over a hundred million viewers without breaking a sweat.
Just like the NBA draft, the NFL has its own annual draft, which is the golden ticket for rookies worldwide to strut their stuff and break into the big leagues. Before the main event, there's a rookie training camp a four-day showcase where rookies get tested and evaluated. Scouts use this to gather intel and help teams make their picks.
But here's the kicker: thousands of rookies throw their hats in the ring each year, and not everyone makes the cut. The draft has seven rounds, with about 250 rookies getting picked. The rest? They're undrafted and only a handful of them ever make it to the league. So, not everyone gets a shot at the rookie training camp.
Usually, before the camp, the league sends out invites based on scout reports, game performance, and pro recommendations. These invites get rookies into state-level camps, and from there, about 330 make it to the big camp in Indianapolis.
At this camp, it's not just scouts; you've got execs, coaches, and team docs from all 32 teams checking out the talent.noveldrama
For Luke, his college career was practically invisible one game and two minutes in four years. Scouts had zilch on him. Even if they looked, his first three years were a blank slate. He was a ghost, unknown to everyone.
So, even though he decided to go for the draft, his chances were slim. Forget the rookie training camp; he might not even make it to the state-level selection.
But now, that problem was history. Rick's recommendation letter was his golden ticket to the state-level selection, cracking open the door to his draft journey!
This was a game-changer. Luke looked up, eyes wide with shock, "Coach!"
Luke had never really talked to Rick. He was more familiar with Anthony. Before the Rose Bowl, the coaches picked Kevin as the starting QB, and Luke figured Rick didn't believe in him.
No words needed; a look said it all. Rick's eyes showed he got it, but he didn't explain. He just said, "The team's still got some gaps. This year's lineup has only Logan, Rahim, and you with a shot at the draft. Logan and Rahim are pretty much set. I thought you might need a chance to show everyone what you can do, just like you did in those last two games."
The days when Ivy League schools ruled NCAA football are ancient history. Now, it's all about Ohio State, USC, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, and LSU dominating the gridiron.

Even USC took a nosedive after Reggie Bush got busted for taking bribes from sports agents before the 2006 draft. The NCAA came down hard, and this year they even lost to UCLA, marking the end of a decade-long reign for the Trojans and the start of some dark times.
Sure, the Bruins snagged the Rose Bowl this year, but they didn't even crack the top eight in the national rankings. They were totally outclassed by the state schools in offense, defense, and special teams.
Like Rick said, the Bruins only had two draft-worthy players: tight end Logan Newman and linebacker Rahim Moore. But neither of them was first-round material. Their draft fate hinged on their performance at the rookie training camp. If they slipped up, their draft stock could plummet.
As for Luke, Rick couldn't pin him down.
Physically and technically, Luke had too many gaps. Forget the draft; he might not even cut it as an undrafted rookie. But when it came to game smarts, Luke was top-tier. In crunch time, he made killer decisions. His long passes, short passes, footwork, and evasions were all on point.
Yeah, his skills needed work, but he led the Bruins to a Rose Bowl win. It was a head- scratcher even Rick couldn't figure out.
Every head coach can recommend players, especially the coach of the Rose Bowl champs. Rick had mulled over guys like running back Marcus Lynch and defensive tackle David Carter.
After a lot of thought, Rick picked Luke. Luke had more unknowns and needed more chances to prove himself. The recommendation letter could get him into the state selection, but it wasn't a guaranteed ticket to the rookie training camp. Marcus and David were almost sure bets for the state camp; they could get in on their own merit. After weighing his options, Luke stood out. Rick knew it was a gamble. But wasn't subbing him in during the Rose Bowl a gamble too?
"Thanks!" Luke finally said, pouring all his feelings into those simple words.

Rick saw the fire and passion in Luke's eyes, the deep love and madness that made Rick's heart race. He knew he'd made the right call. "You won the last two minutes of the game; the least I can do is win you a chance to show what you got."
Rick stood up and gave Luke a pat on the shoulder. "I look forward to seeing you on the pro field one day."
"Thanks," Luke repeated, feeling like no other words could top that. He turned to leave, then heard Rick's voice, "I should keep the recommendation letter. I need to send it to the association."
"Oh!" Luke realized, handing the letter back with a grin. "Well, I'm off to train. Still got today's session to finish."
It was a day of highs and lows.
The high was taking the first step toward the draft; the Bruins had won the Rose Bowl, and today was a day to celebrate. After a wild season, they could finally chill.
The low was saying goodbye. The seniors hugged and said their farewells. After graduation, they'd go their separate ways, and who knew if they'd ever cross paths again.
"Did you hear?" Logan's face was lit up with gossip. He walked up to Luke, nudging him and winking, "Kevin Prince decided not to enter the draft."
Luke's jaw dropped a bit, surprised but understanding. Quarterbacks are always in demand, but many get cut every year. Making a name in that position is tough. Even if Kevin entered the draft, he'd probably go undrafted.
Now, Luke got why Kevin had shown up at the training field this morning. It was a
goodbye; Kevin was saying his farewell too.
Looking at the lush green field, Luke's joy was mixed with a touch of sadness.
