Chapter 056: Revel in the Festivities
Man, last night was off the chain! The game, the win, the party-it was all nuts. The whole campus in Westwood was lit. Students were out in the streets, singing, partying like there was no tomorrow, and getting wasted.
For the Pac-12, the Rose Bowl is like the holy grail of football. It's their Super Bowl, man! So, you can imagine how big a deal it was for UCLA to snag that trophy after 25
long years.
After the game, they handed out the MVP awards. Logan Newman snagged best offensive player, and Justin James Watt took home best defensive player. Then, all the Bruins hit the stage and hoisted that Rose Bowl trophy high. But the real party was just getting started.
Even though he only played for two minutes, Luke was the man of the hour. Everyone was all over him, making him drink, play games, and celebrate. Booze was flowing like a river, and Luke drank until he blacked out. Next thing he knew, he woke up in a bathtub.
He had no clue where he was, but it sure wasn't his place. And he had zero memory of how he got there.
Stumbling out of the tub, he found bodies sprawled all over the living room. The stench of booze hit him hard, making his stomach churn and his head pound. Last night was a blur-beer, wine, whiskey, brandy, vodka-everything mixed together. He couldn't even remember when he started losing it.
The only clear memory he had was when the offensive team got called up at the party. They had this giant Rose Bowl-sized cup filled to the brim with booze. Each player had to take a turn drinking from it. Luke tried to sneak to the front but got shoved to the back. Luckily, his teammates didn't slack off too much. Still, by the time it was his turn, there was like 700 milliliters left.
He chugged it all, and that was pretty much game over for him.
Even though he was awake now, his head was still pounding, and he felt like he was walking on a boat. Navigating through the living room was like playing Minesweeper, almost stepping on people left and right. He finally made it outside, but the bright California sun made him squint like a vampire.
Looking around, he realized he was still on campus, at a frat house. These places were always party central, loaded with booze and weed. The weird part was, their party was on the other side of campus. How the heck did he end up here?
After standing there like a zombie for a bit, he adjusted to the sunlight. He checked to make sure he wasn't sparkling like a "Twilight" vampire, then started walking. He debated whether to run home or call a cab.
A wave of nausea made the decision for him. Cab it was.
He pulled out his phone, booked a ride, and staggered to the taxi stand at the school gate. In car-crazy America, especially in LA, public transport is a joke, and you rarely see cabs. You gotta book one in advance.
The cab showed up in about fifteen minutes, and Luke wobbled his way back to his apartment.
No surprise, Jay and Logan were MIA. Who knows where they crashed or when they'd make it back. Luke hit the shower first, ditching his stinky clothes. Then he whipped up a simple sandwich and scrambled some eggs to calm his growling stomach.
Feeling the warmth in his belly, reality started to hit Luke, and a grin spread across his face. He started humming, and the sunlight streaming through the window seemed
even more awesome.
He glanced at the clock-almost eleven. Suddenly, it hit him like a ton of bricks. Jack and Annie! They were still at the hotel, planning to drive back to San Francisco in the afternoon. He had totally spaced out!

Last night, after the game, he barely had time to say hi to them before diving into the celebration.
Luke scarfed down his sandwich, dashed downstairs, and found his old Chevy in the parking lot. Over the past six months, he'd gotten used to running everywhere, so the Chevy was mostly for grocery runs. It was practically gathering dust.
When he turned sixteen, like most of his buddies, he got his driver's license. For his birthday, Jack gave him a classic American gift-a used car. Jack had picked out this navy blue Chevy for just fifteen grand. It was a solid deal and super reliable. When Luke moved to LA for college, this car was his trusty companion.
Firing up the engine, Luke smoothly left the apartment and headed downtown. After parking, just as he was about to enter the hotel, his phone buzzed. It was Annie. "Mom, I'm here, I'm here," Luke said quickly, sounding way different from his on-field swagger. "Sorry, I woke up late. You haven't left yet, right?"noveldrama
"Luke, Luke," Annie chuckled, calling his name twice to stop his rambling. "We're having brunch at the restaurant across the street. Don't go to the hotel; come straight over."
"Across the street?" Luke turned around and spotted the restaurant. Standing alone in the parking lot, he now had a clear target. "I see you. I'm coming over now." He hung up and quickly walked over, ready to cross the street. He noticed a warning glance from the window, so he stopped, went back to the sidewalk, and crossed at the crosswalk.
Pushing open the glass door of the restaurant, a bell jingled, and Luke immediately saw his parents in a booth, looking relaxed and happy, waving at him.
Annie waved him over and, before he could sit down, asked, "Are you starving? It's almost lunchtime, so you can have a big brunch."

A sandwich with scrambled eggs and milk-does that count? But seeing Annie's eager eyes, Luke smiled and nodded, "I'm really starving. I barely ate anything last night..." He stopped, realizing he might've said too much.
Jack put on a stern face and said, "Some things are better kept to yourself."
Luke nodded, but Annie couldn't help but smile. She didn't call out Jack's act and called the waiter to order breakfast for Luke. Then she said, "Congrats! You finally did it. Not only did you play, but you also won the Rose Bowl! I knew you could do it!" She nudged Jack. "What do you think?"
Jack cleared his throat, remembering his emotional outburst last night, feeling a bit awkward. Finally, he said, "You did great, but don't get too cocky. Keep working hard..." He stopped, realizing he was slipping into dad mode again. Clearing his throat, he added, "Anyway, last night was amazing! You deserved it."
Jack looked at Luke, who had grown from a babbling baby to a strong young man, achieving his dreams through hard work.
He knew it was his job as a dad to tell Luke that dreams and reality often differ. While chasing dreams, you gotta stay grounded; otherwise, it's like building castles in the air beautiful but ultimately disappointing.
But Jack didn't want to kill this dream. Not because he was an idealist, but because he had seen the whole journey from day one. He knew better than anyone how much effort and sweat Luke had put in to get here.
"This is what you deserve!" Jack genuinely believed that.
What do you think?
