Chapter 0044
With a few more hours spent comforting Bethany and promising her that Her scumbag husband, Jason, was going to get what he deserved, Amara returned home.
However, the moment she opened the door and walked in, she was surprised to see Melanie on the couch, sucking face with some unknown guy.
"Oh God," She quickly covered her eyes and turned away, thankfully, gaining the attention of the two on the couch.
"Mara, you're back? What happened to golfing?" Melanie asked as she shoved her partner away, much to his displeasure.
"I uh... Finished early and...did I...interrupt something? I can leave if I-"
"No, not at all," Melanie shoved the man once again, this time around it was off the chair and onto his foot. "We were just about wrapping up." She turned to her partner and shooed him off. "You can leave." The guy looked reluctantly. "But Mel," He tried protesting.
"I said you can leave, can't you see my friend is here. Now, leave."
Hearing the sharpness in her tone, the man knew better than to stay and complain. He grabbed his jacket and shoes grumbling and glaring at Amara as he stalked towards the door.
"Is he...who is he?" Amara asked.
"Just one of them guys I picked up from the club, why'd you ask?"
Amara glanced back at the door. She stared for a moment longer, trying to figure out why the guys face had seemed so familiar for some reason. After a few seconds, she shook her head. "Nothing, I was just curious."
Melanie grinned. "Curious eh?" She winked but before she could say anything more, Amara gave her a look that indicated that she'd best put whatever joke she's currently brewing, to rest. And just that, Melanie did.
She waited until Amara had poured herself a glass of water before she began speaking again. "I'm sorry you had to see that."
"It's not your fault." Amara assured. "Now that I think about it, I think I've over stayed my welcome. You've houses me for nearly two months and I've been imposing on you all that time, perhaps I should move out." "What? There's no need to go that far! Firstly, you're not imposing. You pay bills and you help around the house, if it's because of that bimbo a few minutes ago, I can stop bringing men over. It can just be the two of us." Getting up from the chair, Melanie met Amara in the kitchen and took her hand. "You're more important than any man, Amara."
Melanie wholeheartedly meant every word she said, not because her relationship with men have always ended up a disaster, seeing as one would either cheat on her, use her for her assets or her body, or break up with her for something stupid.
Amara, on the other hand, was her
friend. They have known each other for years now and Amara has always been@good friend, not to mention the fact that she's currently the only real family she had. Sure her father, who ironically was abusive alcoholic and her brother who was an overly irresponsible Womanizer, were her blood family and still alive, but they never really cared for her. And her mother, well the woman was another story, whether it was tradition or the fact that she was too blinded by love, the woman had refused to live Melanie's father.
Stupid and pitiful, she had
concluded at the age of 17, after all, it wasn't always wise to give your life to a man. Love him, sure, but never put your entire heart in his hand, never trust him like he wouldn't back stab you, because the moment he sees another female walking in skirt, he will chase and never think he wouldn't hit you, because from Melanie's experience, she had seen her mother get hit more times than an MMA boxer.
So, it was safe and right, for Melanie to say that she had put her heart more into her friendship with Amara than into any relationship that she'd ever find herself in.
"So stay, won't you?" Melanie gave the puppy dog eyes and Amara could only but chuckle.
"I know you like having me around, Mel, and so do I, but," Gently, she touched Melanie's cheek. "You need to find happiness. You know, a man who'd make you happy and you can bring him home one day and get all funky without worrying about me walking in and dis- virgining my holy eyes."
Melanie chuckled at Amara's words, but the look in her eyes looked far from amusement.
Amara recognized that look, it was the exact same one Melanie had in her eyes each time she thought of her unfortunate childhood.
"Honesty," She began. "I don't think I can find happiness. Perhaps my Mr. Right doesn't exist for me out there." She looked up and smiled, forcefully. "And even if he does, I don't want to take any chances, I want to guard my heart and make sure I don't end up like my mother, because I can't handle it if that happens."
Amara couldn't blame Melanie for feeling that way, after all, when you grew up in a household where abuse and infidelity ran rampant, it was hard not to feel scared. From NôvelDrama.Org.
"You understand me, right, Mara?"
Amara briefly thought about all the things she had endured in her marriage to Tobias.
The neglect from him, the abuse from his mother and sister which left wounds and scar that ran fresh on the skin of her back, and the humiliation she had endured every single day while trying to make him love her.
"Of course," Amara finally spoke, her voice barely a whisper.
"But," She continued. "You shouldn't give up on hope so soon. After all, the world is a big place. Who knows, you could find happiness in the next corner."
Melanie leaned into Amara touch
and shook her head, chuckling. "It
doesn't work like that. Our world isn't some teen romance story and I'm definitely not the female lead, nor the side character that ends up with the second male lead after the female lead dumps him, so please," Pausing, she opened her eyes and the desperation in them reminded Amara of how broken Melanie was last year when her fiancé cheated on her and took nearly half of her fortune. "Can we not talk about this any further?"
