Chapter 267

In Emmalie's hospital room, the Rowland family surrounded her, showering her with concern, while she soaked in the princess treatment.
Even Max felt a pang of guilt toward Emmalie. "Emmalie, you saved Thea this time. Once she's better, I'll help you negotiate with her. After all, she's Mr. Hendrix's wife. We can't let your act of saving her go unrewarded." Emmalie lowered her gaze, a cold smile flickering across her face.
'Max, you practically dragged me into the operating room like a hostage, and now you're pretending to be the good guy? This is quite the spectacle,' Emmalie thought.
"Max, it's unnecessary," she said, hesitant to confront him, her voice barely a whisper. "Being able to save Thea is my blessing. I've never sought any rewards. There's no better news for me than to see her recover."
Her thoughtfulness was almost painful to witness. Ivy caressed her cheek tenderly. "If only Thea could be half as considerate as you, I wouldn't have to worry so much about her. Emmalie, I'll make sure Thea pays her debt to you. Just wait for it." Meanwhile, Thea sat in a wheelchair, pushed in by Nicolas. The wall between them blocked all her yearnings for family connection. She smiled, but it was a bitter and strained smile, and Nicolas couldn't help but feel heartbroken at the sight. "Nicolas, let's go home," Thea said, shaking her head as she crumpled the lab report in her hand. She knew that even if the Rowland family learned the truth, they would likely accuse her of staging everything and hurl insults at her.
She didn't want to humiliate herself any further. Rather than let Emmalie use this as an opportunity to tarnish her reputation, it was better to find all her vulnerabilities and strike hard. What Thea didn't realize was that a figure was following closely behind. Duncan carefully smoothed out the crumpled paper, and the results on it sparked a cold light in his eyes.
'Mom has type A blood, Dad has type B, but Emmalie has type O. Emmalie can't possibly be their daughter,' Duncan thought.
The report bore the stamp of Silvercreek First Hospital, indicating it was legitimate, not a forgery. Emmalie wasn't the kid of the Rowland family.
At that moment, an inexplicable joy flickered in Duncan's heart, and he ultimately chose to tuck the document away in his sleeve. No matter what, he would keep this secret for Emmalie. Duncan's hidden thoughts finally had a chance to be revealed. On the day Thea was discharged from the hospital, the sun shone brightly. Cameron had wanted her to stay, but Thea politely refused for various reasons. She truly disliked the smell of antiseptic in hospitals and felt much more at home in her own space.
As she lay in bed, Oliver peeled apples for her and even fed them to her himself. Thea felt confident in her decision to raise Oliver.
While scrolling through her phone, Thea saw a trending news story that caught her attention. Piano prodigy Emmalie announced an indefinite postponement of her concert due to a severe infection she incurred while saving her sister.
In the accompanying photo, Emmalie's face showed signs of weakness, her lips a delicate pink. Even lying in a hospital bed, she appeared carefully styled for the shot.
What new drama is Emmalie stirring up now?' Thea thought.
Flipping through the comments, Thea noticed a sharp divide: many expressed sympathy for Emmalie while simultaneously criticizing Thea. 'Just great, Thea thought, letting out a cold laugh.

"Thea," Nicolas said as tre strode in, immediately zeroing in on the light in her palm. "For now, just focus on getting better. Don't pay any mind to the online chatter. I'm here, and nothing will go wrong." Nicolas was deeply concerned. The trending topic had been pushed by Max, who seemed displeased with Nicolas's earlier promises, looking to exploit the situation further.
Despite Nicolas's earnestness, Thea smiled. "You're underestimating me. I've heard countless rumors throughout my life. They've already decided I'm just a terrible person. Keeping this trending topic alive will only backfire. Let them say what they want. It won't cost me a thing."
Thea had given up, but Nicolas wouldn't allow it. "That's because these online users have never bothered to understand you. Thea, you're the best person in the world, and I won't let them slander or insult you."
Nicolas wasn't great with sweet talk, and even Oliver felt a chill at his words, quietly stepping aside to give them space. Thea found herself slightly uncomfortable under Nicolas's intense gaze. "Any news from Amelia?"
"She's in Darwin's hands. If you want to deal with her, you can do so at any time," Nicolas replied.
Thea's expression turned dangerous as she lowered her gaze. "Let's do it today."
Her broken bones hindered her movement, but her mind was still sharp. "Give me a moment. I want to speak with her alone."
In the dark, icy storage room, Amelia was doused with cold water repeatedly, her hair crystallizing into icy flowers. Nicolas was known for his brutal methods, and with Amelia targeting Thea this time, her fate was destined to be grim. Nicolas kept his promise and let Thea enter alone, the silence enveloping the space. Amelia could feel her body warming up noticeably as she struggled against the cloth stuffed in her mouth.
When her long lashes fluttered open, she saw Thea sitting there, completely unscathed. 'Why am I suffering like this while the person involved in the accident is recovering just fine?' Amelia thought, her mental state unraveling.
Amelia lunged at Thea again and again but bound by the ropes, she could only crash onto the icy surface, looking both pathetic and ridiculous.
Thea watched with a slight easing of her frustration. "Once upon a time, you used that pretty face to captivate Jake, nearly becoming his wife. Amelia, don't you feel any regret over how far you've fallen?"
Amelia's current state couldn't undo the trauma she had inflicted on Thea. Thea reached out and pulled the cloth from Amelia's mouth, disgustedly tossing it to the floor. But Amelia wasn't done yet.
'If Thea hadn't pulled back in time, she would have ended up with teeth marks on her hand.
"Regret? Thea, if it weren't for the luck of having Nicolas by your side, you'd probably be dead by now." Amelia spat, her face twisted with rage. "The only reason I'm still alive is to see you die... Even if I can't achieve my goal, just hurting you badly will satisfy me." Amelia looked drastically different from her high school days, which was why Thea initially didn't recognize her. The only thing that remained was Amelia's relentless hatred toward Thea
"I've made it very clear before. Your mother's death has nothing to do with me." Thea wasn't there to debate useless truths with Amelia. She had endured too much baseless hatred. One more from Amelia wouldn't matter.
However, she did have a question. "If I'm not mistaken, someone is backing you, right? With your skills and now that you lost Jake's help, getting your hands on an unregistered car to commit a crime and even hiding for so long right under Nicolas's nose seem nearly impossible," Thea said
It wasn't that Thea looked down on Amelia. Thea knew exactly how capable Amelia was after working alongside her for years.
