Rooster Hill, the manor, the underground dungeons, and the mentor... The family graves tucked away behind the hill tell tales of the bitter feud between the Grevenbergs and the Sartoris, not to mention the Blood Moon organization, Shadow, Wolf... Memories crashed back like a tidal wave. Chloe suddenly remembered everything.

"Friend is a Grevenberg descendant, and he's hell-bent on avenging against the Sartoris. He wants to obliterate Connor!" The past flashed vividly in her mind. And then there was Grant's so-called fake death scheme.

Maddie broke the silence, "According to the plan, you and your baby were supposed to die from a ruptured brain tumor during childbirth. Then, a stand-in would take your place to fool everyone. The doctors at Concordia Hospital, the stand-in, even the funeral home staff, they were all in on this grand charade. Connor would only have a brief farewell with the stand-in at the morgue. Chloe, as you, would vanish from existence. So, it was me who saved you and your child."

It all seemed too wild to believe, but Chloe's memory was back. Given Grant's previous antics—imprisoning her mentor and his far-fetched lineage-this didn't feel as shocking.

"Why did you save me?" Chloe asked, puzzled by Maddie's betrayal of Friend to help her. It didn't add up.

"I told you, I didn't save you; I saved myself. If you were dead, they'd need a stand-in, and that would be me. But knowing Grant, he'd make sure I never wake up," Maddie smirked bitterly. "I don't want to end up like Suzanne. I just want to live."

Mentioning Suzanne sent a chill through Chloe. It was clear now-Grant had silenced Suzanne for slipping up. Chloe felt a cold shiver run down her spine. She knew Grant was ruthless, but since he was her friend, he'd always been gentle around her, making her overlook his terrifying reputation as Claud.

"So, why are you telling me all this today? What's your game?" Chloe sensed danger despite Maddie's apparent help.

Maddie continued, "Your friend's plan didn't pan out. Do you think he'll just walk away? Ms. Chloe, I apologize, but I can only help you once, not again."

Chloe's instincts flared, triggering her to reach for the phone by her bed. Hitting that button would surely bringa nurse within three minutes. Maddie didn't stop her.

"Impossible. Joyful Haven isn't his turf," Chloe protested. She recalled her friend suggesting a move to the Blissful Retreat back at the hospital. That must've been when Grant started scheming. But Connor had turned it down. Joyful Haven wasn't Grant's territory.

Maddie chuckled, "It wasn't before, but from the first day you movedzin, it was. You might not fully grasp your friend's wealth and influence. He's secretly owned this place for a while now."
