Chapter 63
Chapter 63
Without waiting for Arthur to speak up, he continued, "Eight years ago, when Lucy had just gotten married to you, she ran home from university in the heavy rain. But what were you doing? You were driving Lizbeth back home, and when you drove past Lucy, you didn't even spare her a glance!"
Arthur remembered that incident. Back then, Lucy had just become Mrs. Johnson after drugging him and getting into his pants. She had called him to go pick her up, but he had hung up without letting her finish.
That night, she had had a fever of 40 degrees and nearly lost her life...
"Seven years ago, Lizbeth quarreled with Lucy and pushed her down the stairs. But before Lucy could complain about Lizbeth, you made her apologize to Lizbeth! Mr. Johnson, have you ever heard of anyone making the victim apologize to the perpetrator?" Maddox's gaze that was usually gentle was filled with scorn.
Arthur was rendered speechless.
Lizbeth had always acted like a good girl in front of him, while he had hated Lucy because he thought she was sly and scheming.
Therefore, when Lizbeth had told him that Lucy had pushed her down the stairs, he did not have any doubts and immediately made Lucy apologize.
But why hadn't Lucy explained things to him?
That wasn't right, he remembered that she had explained, but he hadn't believed her...
Seeing Arthur go pale, Maddox felt a type of satisfaction he never felt before.
He had wanted to find some time to remind Arthur of everything he'd done, but he changed his mind. Perhaps he should let Arthur think about it himself!
...
Arthur stood at the door of the ward for a long time, so long that his legs became slightly numb.
He looked at the door as if he could see Lucy through it.
From the moment Maddox had left, he had started thinking about how many mistakes he had made.
He started counting from five years ago, but he still couldn't find the answer.
Arthur shifted his numb legs and walked up to the door. He pushed it open gently and walked to her bedside.
Lucy was lying down on the hospital bed, and her pretty features didn't look as lively and dazzling as they did when she was awake. Instead, she looked warm and gentle.
Five years ago, he had liked how she looked while she was asleep because she looked like Elyse. But now, looking at her face, all he could think of was her bright smile, and he could no longer recall what Elyse looked like when she smiled.
"Lucy..." He muttered her name and reached out to touch her face, but in the end, he lowered it.
He stood there for a while, tucked her in, and walked out quietly.
"Arthur, why are you calling me in the middle of the night? If you don't have anyone to hug, kiss, or f*ck, I do!" Chad got Arthur's call just as he was about to come, and he was so frustrated.
Arthur stood in the corridor, his eyes filled with anger. "Have you found the person I asked you to find?"
"Arthur, I'll tell you about it later!" Chad's private part was still in some woman's body, and he wished he could toss his phone out. "Bye!"
"Hang up if you dare." Arthur's voice was very soft, but it sounded slightly threatening.
Chad shivered and went soft. "Hehe, I won't hang up. I was just kidding! I've found the ugly person who does a good job you wanted me to find!"
"Hmm." Arthur's eyes glinted.
"By the way, Arthur, how will you compensate me?" Chad looked at the woman, who was looking at him in disappointment. "I was taken advantage of by so many ugly dudes while carrying out this task! Your buddy Chad is heartbroken..."
Before he could finish, Arthur interrupted him coldly, "Take that person to Lindbarry Chateau. I'll head over now."
With that, he hung up.
He glanced back at the ward before walking to the elevator.
He thought, 'Lucy, I will avenge you!'
He would avenge her for all the times other people hurt her and when he hurt her.
...
Lucy had a vague memory of someone visiting her and calling out her name.
However, when she woke up, there was no one else in the ward.
She laughed at herself and muttered, "Did you think Arthur would come here every day to be with you?"
She had definitely injured her brain, not her body!
Right then, the door opened, and Arthur walked in holding a box of butter cookies and four bottles of milk.
When their eyes met, Lucy suddenly felt a bit awkward.
Had Arthur heard her?
Arthur was as expressionless as ever. He glanced at her and put down the butter cookies and milk.
Then, he went to the bathroom to fetch her some toiletries and handed them to her. "Brush your teeth first and wipe your face with the warm towel."
He put a basin on the floor and motioned for her to spit her toothpaste into it.
Lucy was not used to this version of him. "My injuries aren't that serious. I can brush my teeth in the bathroom." Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
As usual, he probably hadn't heard her, had he?
"Will you do it yourself or shall I help you?" Arthur glanced at the toothbrush in her hand.
Lucy pursed her lips and began to brush her teeth. She knew him well enough to know that if she said anything else, he would 'help' her brush her teeth right away.
After she finished washing up, Arthur put away the toiletries and pushed the box of butter cookies to her.
He was quiet while he did all that like a full-fledged nanny. He seemed like a different person altogether.
"Arthur, what exactly are you trying to do?" After she finished eating the second butter cookie whilst he stared at her, Lucy frowned and asked.
She thought he was behaving strangely for the past two days, and she felt a little uncertain. Could he have found out about Caden's identity?
Arthur looked at her coldly and suddenly took out a handkerchief, helping her wipe her mouth.
But maybe he was not used to doing such a thing, he used a little too much strength.
"Arthur! Johnson!" Lucy backed away and repeated her question. "What exactly are you trying to do?"
Arthur folded his handkerchief, put it back in his suit pocket, and looked straight at her.
Just when she thought he wouldn't speak, he suddenly said, "I misunderstood you about many things before. I'm sorry."
"..." Lucy swallowed the butter cookie and lowered her gaze without making a sound.
She had fallen in love with him in one minute and used three years to love him, then five years to forget him.
She wasn't benevolent enough to forgive him over a single apology.
In the next two weeks, Lucy stayed in the hospital, and Arthur kept her company. He took care of her personally every day.
However, him taking care of her personally wasn't a good thing. The water for washing up was either too hot or too cold, and when he peeled fruits, he either cut away too much of the flesh or dropped the whole fruit into the trash... Anyway, it was a disaster.
Lucy had told him several times to go back to work, but he acted as if he hadn't heard her.
Fortunately, he improved a little bit towards the end—the water was no longer hot enough to steam a whole chicken in.
Chad and Kylah would visit her too, and they would always coincidentally come at the same time. Then, they would bicker and mock each other to the point where Lucy prayed they wouldn't come anymore. They were too annoying!
However, those two were not self-conscious at all.
