Edward patted Janice on the shoulder. "Come check on the steak with me."

Barbara watched as they walked into the kitchen together, standing side-by-side as they sampled the steak.

She turned to her husband, Robert, and said, "I think he likes this woman."

Robert, however, countered, "She's done you a favor. How do you plan on repaying her?"noveldrama

Barbara was caught off guard. "...A car? A house? Money?"

"How superficial."

Barbara scoffed. "Then you tell me!"

"You always have a year-end gathering with the other ladies in the capital, don't you? Take her with you and introduce her to them."

Robert's gaze flickered toward Janice in the kitchen. "Edward can't always be there for her. If she needs help, she'd have someone to turn to."

In other words, he wanted Barbara to use her connections to subtly let influential figures in the capital know that Janice was protected by the Moores.

Barbara caught on quickly. "Oh! That works! I was being shallow."

But then something else clicked in her mind. "So, you approve of this woman?"

Robert fell silent for a moment before saying, "I think she's great. But more importantly, my son likes her. So, I'm satisfied. Edward always had good taste."

"Good thing, then."

"Hm?" Robert raised a brow.

"Good thing you didn't pull the whole 'If you leave my son, I'll make your life miserable' act. Otherwise, I might've strangled you myself."

After a brief silence, he sighed. "You and Edward both have the wrong impression of me. I may be ruthless when dealing with foreign politics and unwavering when it comes to national interests, but this is family. How could I treat my son like that? But this woman is outstanding. Can she end up with Edward?"

Barbara rolled her eyes. "You make it sound like my son isn't good enough."

Robert chuckled. "That's just your motherly bias talking. As a businessman, being sharp, ruthless, and decisive is a good thing. But in relationships, those traits aren't so desirable. You should remind Edward not to be so stubborn."

He paused, then added casually," I overheard something the other day. Even foreigners have taken notice of her."

"Is that so?"

Barbara tensed up.

Without hesitation, she stood up and strode toward the kitchen. "Edward, I need to ask you something."

Edward set down the spatula and followed her out.

His mother had pulled him aside. Instinctively, he thought that his father might have objections toward Janice.

But instead, Barbara asked, "When are you planning to marry Janice?"

Edward replied, "What?"

"Pick up the pace," Barbara urged. "Your father said that foreign politicians have their eyes on her."

When Barbara returned to the living room, she still looked worried.
