Chapter 9 Helping Hand
Chapter 9 Helping Hand
Layne no doubt helped me through difficult times. He simply let bygones be bygones, and I was very
grateful for it.
However, before I could express my gratitude, Layne grabbed my hand and said excitedly, "Darcey, I
know this money may not be enough, but it does not matter. I will make up the rest. But can you

of you."
I pulled out my hand as it was dipped in hot water. Layne was a married man. I had already been
betrayed by Roger. I could not let another family become unhappy. I said, "Actually, we are just
classmates. You saved that money hard. I can not take it. You should take it back."
Layne refused, and kept me from going. Just as I was about to free myself from his grasp, someone
rushed over and slapped me across the face. I lost my balance and fell to the ground.
The woman shouted, "You b*tch, how dare you seduce my man?!"
I looked up and saw that Layne had stopped her and pulled her outside. This was really unexpected. I
had not been to Layne's wedding to avoid embarrassment, so this was the first time I'd seen his wife,
and under such circumstances. I also saw that she was pregnant as well. I wondered, "Why are we all
pregnant women and she is so energetic?"
Layne tried his best to stop the woman, but her strength was so great that she tore away from Layne
and rushed at me again. I quickly shielded my stomach and did not dare say anything for fear that I
would anger her further.
Just when I was about to despair, suddenly someone shouted to stop the woman "What are you
doing?"
As soon as I heard the voice, I knew it was Gavin. I immediately felt relieved for no reason. The woman
still said hesitantly, "Obviously she has a husband, but she still has the audacity to go out and provoke
others. That's really disgusting!"
Layne desperately signaled his wife to stop talking, and looked at Gavin with apologetic expression. I
immediately thought that they probably had a business relationship.
At that moment Gavin had no intention of attending to other matters. He took me in his arms, waved a
car over and drove to the hospital. I was in his arms the whole time.
When Layne's wife hit me, I curled up so she could not hurt me. I soon felt better after getting into the
car, while Gavin was still comforting me and stroking my hair lightly.
For a moment, I looked up at the anxious Gavin and felt even a little moved. But I knew that this would
never happen. I shook my head and dismissed the unrealistic fantasy.
Gavin saw me shaking my head and thought I was uncomfortable. So, he shouted at the driver, "Can
you hurry up? Don't you see that the patient is dying?"
The driver was innocent. We happened to run into a red light. There was nothing he could do even if he
wanted to be fast.
I said, "I'm fine. Why didn't you drive today?"
"I drove, but I was too scared and forgot. It's better that way, because I can watch you in the back seat,
so you will not get into another fight."
"What happened was not a big deal." I tried to protest.
"Is not this a great thing? Who is this woman? How did you provoke her? She even hit a pregnant
woman on the street!" He asked at the same time.
