Chapter 279
Knowing that Maximilian was worried about her, Katniss nodded instinctively but still
felt uneasy.
Seeing her distracted look, Maximilian knew she probably hadn't taken in what he said. "Don't worry, I'll have someone look into it and let you know if there's any news."
Hearing this, Katniss breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thank you, Maximilian."
She didn't stand on ceremony with Maximilian and was genuinely annoyed by the trouble Laura was causing. If Maximilian could find out, it could be prevented in advance.
Maximilian patted her head, "No need to be so polite with me."
Katniss pursed her lips, didn't say thank you again, and a sweet smile she didn't even notice appeared on her lips.
The two of them went home together.
At Golden Crest Estates, Mira had already prepared dinner.
Although Katniss had given Mira a half-month vacation, Mira couldn't stay idle and came back early to help, though she still tried to give the couple plenty of space.
Seeing them return, Mira quickly brought the dishes and soup to the table.
When Katniss went to the kitchen to help Mira, Mira pulled her aside mysteriously and said, "Madam, you must let the sir drink more of today's soup..."
"Is it tonic soup? I'll make sure Maximilian drinks more." Katniss was puzzled but nodded when she saw that Mira had served tonic soup.
Maximilian was also very cooperative, and by the end of the meal, both of them had drunk quite a bit of the soup.
After dinner and washing up, Katniss routinely checked Maximilian's physical condition. Maximilian sat leaning against the bed, letting Katniss examine him, his eyes soft and indulgent.
"Are your legs sore today?"
Maximilian had not only stayed at the company for a long time today but also ran around outside for her after work. She was a bit worried that his legs couldn't take it.
Katniss gently squeezed Maximilian's leg and looked up to ask him.
Her eyes were clean and pure, like those of an innocent deer.
"Not too bad." Maximilian couldn't help but reach out and pat Katniss's head, his voice hoarse when he spoke.
The hair between his fingers was soft, making Maximilian feel a bit flustered.
Katniss didn't feel uncomfortable being patted on the head; instead, she leaned closer
in confusion, "Maximilian, is your throat hoarse?"
She was worried that Maximilian might have caught a cold.
Maximilian was stunned. Katniss was so close that he could smell the fresh scent of her body wash.
Her skin was fair and clean, looking particularly enticing.
"Let's sleep." Maximilian pulled Katniss into his arms and reached out to turn off the light.
A blush appeared on Katniss's porcelain-white face, and she let Maximilian hold her without moving.
The room went dark as the light dimmed.
Katniss nestled in Maximilian's arms, feeling his undeniable presence, her ears burning and her heart pounding.
Only now did she understand the meaning behind Mira's earlier look, and her face began to heat up.
As the night deepened, when Maximilian kissed her, Katniss did not refuse.
After that, she even took the initiative to hold Maximilian tightly.
At the hospital, outside the emergency room.
Clara was sobbing softly, her eyes swollen from crying.
Lucas stood beside her, growing more anxious with each passing moment.
Nathan, already in poor health, was even more exhausted after waiting for so long. Dylan paced anxiously and made another call to Oliver.
From the time they arrived at the hospital until now, with Elodie going into surgery for the second time, Oliver had not shown up.
"Still can't get through?"
Seeing his older brother asking, Dylan nodded and walked towards the corner.

Once they reached the hallway corner, Dylan spoke with a grim expression.
"The hospital staff said that Dad brought her in, but he left right after."
It was only after learning this that he had been trying to contact Oliver.
"Mom's injury today is not simple; it must be related to that woman named Laura around Dad."
Lucas knew more about Oliver being seduced by Laura than Dylan did.
But he didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Even if their dad wronged their mom, he hadn't mistreated them as children.
"So what do we do now? We can't reach Dad."
Dylan had been worried about Nathan's treatment recently and hadn't expected such a big scandal at home.noveldrama
"We can only wait." Lucas was also physically and mentally exhausted and didn't want to say much.
Finally, the door to the operating room opened, and they all rushed forward.
The doctor's words were still not optimistic, but at least Elodie's life was not in immediate danger.
However, it wouldn't be easy for Elodie to wake up.
Soon, Elodie was transferred to the intensive care unit.
When they went in and saw Elodie lying pale on the bed, they all felt terrible.
Clara was the first to throw herself by the bed and cry.
"Mom, what's wrong? Please wake up..."
Clara's tears were genuine. After all, Elodie was the one who loved her the most in the Manners family.
If Elodie never woke up, Clara's future would be even harder.
The more Clara thought about it, the more terrified she became, wishing she could wake Elodie up right now.
"Clara, you should go home and rest. I'll stay here and watch over her."

Seeing Clara's fragile and pitiful state, Dylan couldn't bear to see her continue to be sad and urged her to leave.
"No, I want to stay with Mom until she wakes up." Clara wiped her tears and continued, choking up, "If Mom wakes up and sees me, she'll be happy."
After saying that, Clara moved a chair to the bedside and said to the others, "Brothers, you should go rest. I'll stay here with Mom."
Seeing Clara being so sensible, Lucas's heart softened, and he went up to comfort her by patting her head.
"We'll stay. You're weak; go home and rest."
Dylan also persuaded, "You can come see Mom tomorrow. If she were awake, she wouldn't want you to be so tired."
Nathan said nothing, just quietly watching Clara.
He had always doted on Clara and couldn't stand to see her cry.
But now, seeing her red eyes, he couldn't help but think of those chaotic and strange
dreams. In the dreams, Katniss was much more pitiful than Clara, but they ignored her.
So, many words of concern for Clara swirled in his mouth but couldn't come out.
Feeling uneasy under Nathan's gaze, Clara eventually left, still choking up.
"I'll come back to see Mom tomorrow." Clara left reluctantly, and when Lucas offered to
escort her, she shook her head and refused.
"You don't need to see me off; I'll go home obediently."
She was currently living in a house Elodie had rented for her. Although the conditions
weren't bad, they weren't great either.
But she didn't want to go back to that shabby place tonight.
As soon as she left the hospital, Clara dialed a number.
The person on the other end answered quickly, speaking with concern.
"Clara, what's wrong? Did something happen? Why are you calling me so late?" Desmond's voice was low, but his concern was genuine.
Although he had officially broken up with Clara, he couldn't let go of her in private.
Crying, Clara said, "Desmond, my mom is in trouble. I'm so scared. Can you come see
me?"
"Where are you?" Desmond immediately wanted to find her upon hearing her distressed state.
What do you think?
